What new grate to get for Genesis -

Getting new parts for the old girl and not sure what direction to go for the grate. Stainless or porcelain coated or Cast Iron? What do we prefer in this group?

What foods do you grill most often?
Dan, this is just going to turn into another one of those threads where everyone just says what they like to use, including the obligatory RCplanebuyer recommendations even though I don't think he's making grates anymore. I know nobody cares what grates I like anymore than I care what anyone else uses. It's a highly personal choice given the fact that the grates are the part of the grill that we all interact with the most.

I prefer SS rod grates for ease of maintenance and minimal upkeep. Qulimetal would probably be at the top of my recommendations for who makes the best on Amazon.

However now that I have a nice cleaned up set of Weber stamped SS grates, I am looking at giving those a shot.

I agree on the Qlimetal grates, especially the 9mm 304 stainless ones. Very high quality for an Asian import. Probably the easiest to clean and maintain. They will last longer than the grill.

I have to give honorable mention to REAL cast iron grates that Weber made years and years ago. I am fortunate to have one or two sets of these. They have no porcelain coating. That's good because nothing to chip off. But, naturally, you are looking at a substantial amount of upkeep to make sure they stay seasoned. If you don't use your grill for the winter, it is also advisable to remove them and store them, well seasoned, inside where it is dry. I get why most people don't want these, but they are a personal favorite:

The real ones have this Patent info on them:

Here is the set above seasoned and installed on a grill I used to own but have since sold to a friend:

Maybe, but I like different grates/grids depending on the food I'm cooking, but its a pain to swap out the grates. Luckly I have more than one grill available.

I prefer PCI or CI for grilling burgers or steaks, but I don't like cleaning them if I cook anything with a marinade especially if the marinade has sugar or honey. For this reason I avoid cooking that on my E330 with PCI grates and cook that mess on my WSK that has SS rod.

I like SS rod as they clean up well, yet I don't think SS rod sears as well as CI or PCI. I have SS rod on the WSK. I have both SS rod and CI in the BGE and I tend to use the SS rod.

I even like my old stamped stainless grates that I had on my Silver B for 20 years, but they don't sear as well as CI, yet they clean up well.

If @TodSchelliner shared what grill he has and the foods he grills then maybe we could provide guidance tailored to his use.
