What lump to use?

I'm a kingsford guy. I was doing a cook at work for everyone and couldn't get competition briquettes so in a pinch I grabbed hd cowboy lump hoping for higher heat. Epic fail! Had to oh fan direct through a damper hole to even hit 250F! Was able to salvage the cook. Thankfully the judges were co-workers and cbj's! I broke a BBQ commandment! Don't change right before a cook! Der Der Der! :/ That all being said, it's lump, it's lump, it's lump, it's in my head... Help!

I bought several bags of Cowboy when HD had it on sale a couple months ago. I ended up mixing it 50/50 with RO to use it up.

Most lump brands seem to be regional. Royal Oak is very good lump but I keep finding rocks in the bags. I recently tried Cowboy and it smoked the whole time and I didn't like it at all. I use Best of the West mesquite lump but its not great charcoal. Pieces are either huge where I have to break them up or almost coal dust . Some pieces haven't even turned into charcoal. It sparks a lot and leaves a lot of ash. Its cheap and I can get it a lot of places so that is what I use.

Guess I'm lucky here in MO.
I did use Fire King lump, made here in the state, but they were bought out by RO.
Now I get Ozark Oak from a mom and pop produce place nearby.
The guy brings up bags from Ark., 20/lbs. for $13 or $14, can't remember.
Fire King was excellent, and so is OO.
