Here's a print advertisement for the Galley Que portable "ship and shore" boating grill. Although this ad is undated, we know Galley Que was sold throughout the 1960s, so this ad dates from that time period.

Given the connection between George Stephen and bouys that he supposedly cut in half to make his first kettle grill, I figure he must have been a boat owner and asked the guys in the metal fabrication department to make one of these for his boat...then thought maybe Weber could sell these to boaters! I don't know that to be true, but it feels right!

Weber Stephen Product Company introduces the new Gimbal suspended Boating Grill for use on land or sea.

It can be secured to any boat in any desired location by means of a slotted holding bracket and a V shaped rod fitting into the bracket. Ashore it operates with the same efficiency as the regular famous WEBER covered Barbecue Kettles.

The cover and kettle are constructed of heavy gauge metal and are completely porcelainized in a beautiful aqua color.

The dampers in the cover and kettle which regulate the cooking temperature, the ash catcher, the gimbals and the legs are all chrome plated.

Retail $34.95
  • Gimbals hold grill level regardless of boat roll or pitch.
  • Ash catcher is easily removed and retains all sparks and ashes for complete safety. Convenient damper controls.
  • The outer Gimbal ring serves as a convenient carrying handle.
  • Heavy duty waterproof vinyl cover Completely encloses unit. Retail $5.95

When I was occasionally sailing in Lake Charlevoix (MI's northwestern Lower Peninsula,) there were a lot of boats (22' to 50+') with small grills hanging off the stern. IIRC, a lot of them were small kettles.

That’s a very cool piece, are you planning on restoring it Brenda?
Yes I am. At least to the extent I can. I know from experience that the bowl and lid should clean up very well.
The ash catcher looks like a challenge, though. I have been too busy to spend any time with it, but things should settle down
a bit pretty soon and I look forward to seeing what I can do.
