Weber Spirit E-310 2013 Model - Control Knobs

I did a few searches, but couldn’t find anything regarding creative solutions for fixing the poor control knobs on a Spirit E-310 from 2013 with the 3 knobs that are positioned in front of the firebox.

I found this grill on the side of the road one night on the way home from work. The only issue with it besides it not being cleaned was that all 3 of the control knobs were stripped out and were no longer making contact with the flat part of the “D“ thus making it impossible to light or control the burners.

Replacement knobs are $20, but it seems silly to buy another set that will do the same thing (strip out) as the original set did.

i‘ve thought about drilling a hole through the top of the knobs and then using this hole to drill a screw into the center of the stalk that meets up with the flat part of the “D“.

I’ve also thought about inserting a flat thin piece of metal into the stalk to take up the extra space so that it makes contact with the “D”, but I’m not sure how well this would hold up over the long run.

Has anyone out here solved this problem?

Thanks!

The knobs should turn easily enough that there is no chance of stripping them out. It sounds like the grill could use a valve cleaning/lubing.
