Unless it is tough to ensure solid welds, I am surprised we don't see more of these beefy grates without the center rod. After all, it would save them a few more bucks per set.

I don't understand the issue with it. Dave Santana explained the need for it. He said it stabilizes the bars and under stress prevents the welds from breaking on the ends

The center rod is there for those 'few' who think the way to clean the grates is to 'drop them on the ground'......
(if you know who said that..... you know)

Larry, Dave Santana does not use a center rod on his Silver B/1000 grates. He may have on your wolf set, but not on his Genesis grates.

IIRC there are center bars on my brother's grates Dave made for his 2nd generation Summit

OK well looking back on the photos I posted of his grill I see I was incorrect. There are no bars. I still don't get all the hand wringing over them though. They're on the underside.
I'll lay odds that bar helping to stabilize things is what helps keep the tooling and manufacturing. So perhaps if that crossmember was not there, maybe those grates would cost 1/3rd more than they do now

I don't remember who posted these grates.

I think it might have been Cody. But they were for a Spirit 2 burner. They are the right length, but not wide enough to cover a Genesis Silver B. Someone then mentioned that maybe they would about the right size for a 3 burner if you wanted to add a Weber Steam N Chips smoker. Well, since I was in the middle of my Genesis 5 rehab and had a new Steam N Chips and needed grates, I decided to take a shot with them. They were $47 for 9MM grates at the time. Well, my initial test with them and the smoke box are telling me that they are going to be perfect with no modification needed. So my Genesis 5 build will have some sweet 9mm Stainless rod grates (non magnetic) for only $47 bucks. They have gone back up now. But thanks to Cody or whoever posted them and suggested they might work with the smoke box. They will be included in my build thread when I get the burners, flavo bars and everything else installed and I will post a photo then.

Truth be told, I think they are a poor design and build. If they were made in Stainless, they would be a lot better, but they inevitably turn to dust after a few years. I don't know how well they perform either, as I have never cooked with one, but I would probably never own a personal grill with something that took up that much grill space.
