Weber Genesis Gold Frame Advice Please

I purchased this Weber Genesis Gold Silver B off the CL for $80. There is only a bit of rust on the left side of the upper frame of the grill. The grill needed a good cleaning. Weber can sell me a new upper frame for about $89.

and onto my question, is there a less expensive fix?

I asked my beloved man for a mig welder and he said no. Youtube wouldn't provide me enough schooling on beginner welding to not weld my face to the grill.

What is a fair price to pay for this fix?

Laura, I say you bite the bullet and spend the $89 for a new upper frame. I have one of these grills and they are really great grills. You will have a $169 grill that will last for a long time. I put almost $300 into mine and I am extremely happy with my investment.

Decisions, decisions.
Jeff, I like the steel tube hack as it appeals to my fixer upper side. I am going to tear down the grill this weekend to clean out the firebox. The rest of the frame appears to be in good condition, barring a bit of rust on the grate holding the legs together which I can use my grinder to clean up before the paint job.

Pat down in Katy, Tx(we just got back from visiting friends down there, we just love Texas), this is my first Weber gasser so I don't mind putting some dough into it either, knowing I should get some ROI either. I need new grates as the one grate is rusted through in several areas.

I spent time searching craigslist hoping for a similar model frame to switch out for my rusty one but similar models had similar rust issue with that cross piece. I contemplated spending the $89 plus shipping for the upper frame body but wanted to spend my cold hard cash on super solid grates from that rcplanebuyer guy on ebay. Then I found this post about using some angle steel to fabricate the needed cross piece.

So I dropped $13. ish bucks for a piece of that angle steel, grabbed my newly purchased angle grinder and got to work on refurbishing. (I will post the whole refurbish in a different post.) I used screws I had on hand and bought some Rustoleum Ultra High Heat Paint and Primer for the cross piece and my grill frame.

I did the same thing but with aluminum. The biggest reason that cross member rusts out is because of the corrosion between dissimilar metals causing galvanic corrosion. So I used aluminum with stainless steel fasteners and it's been fine
