Walnut smoke wood?

Hey all I just scored 3 cherry trees from work which I promptly cut up into smoking wood. There are 2 walnut trees that I can have. I was going to cut it up for my wood stove for the house and got to thinking... What do y'all think of walnut for smoking wood? I've used nut woods before like pecan but never thought about walnut? If you think it would be good what you recommend smoking it on beef, pork, chicken or fish? Thanks

It's a strong flavored smoke wood. The Black Walnut I used from my neighbor I did sparingly mixed with Oak & Cherry on Beef.
I know that wood species differ across the US and Canada, but for me in this location, I don't use it that often.

Walnut wood can be toxic when burned. In my part of the country, the old timers built grain bins (in the barns) out of walnut because wood worms can't eat those without dying.

I was at a friends house during the Holidays, on Christmas, when his fireplace was smoking. He was burning walnut in the fireplace and it brought on an asthma attack (and I don't have asthma:confused:). At any rate, I would NEVER use walnut as a smoke wood, for those reasons.

Just a thought...

^^^i agree with Robert. Not a great wood for smoking meats.

Walnut does smell good in a fire outdoors.
I also found it in the mixed hardwood i burn in my woodstove.

Dustin,
I don't know how large the walnut trees are, but if they are fairly large, they may be worth some serious money as furniture wood. My parents had some old black walnut trees near their house. They were offered $10,000 for them. Yes, $10K when that was real money. You might want to check unless they are too small or scrawny.

Thanks for the thoughts on this. Sounds like a loser on using for smoke wood. Barry these trees were poor doers in our orchard and not real big. Doubt they are worth much but heck for that kind of money it would be worth checking into ;)
