I could actually see an advantage to having two different gauges. It would look funny, but give you information. If the centering annoys you, you could drill a properly centered hole and get a gauge that is big enough to hide the existing hole.

My comment on centering the gauge was related to this hack job. It was a mongrel of two or three years of parts I think.
