Vent tabs

Anyone bend the small lower vent tabs that is on the inside of the wsm? It seems that even when closed all the way, it is still open just a tad. Perhaps contributing to the reason I'm unable to shut the unit down when closing all the vents. I'd sure like to save any charcoal that I may have left.

Luis, I have bent those little tabs, had too since I cut my vent holes a little off and the vent cover woudn't fit otherwise. No big deal, they are only there for folks that can't apply the brakes on time!

i think eventually, they will "melt" away.
i did nothing to mine, and the other day, i noticed they were gone.

One of my tabs (one one vent) broke off early, but even with them, I haven't seen a problem getting the WSM to shut down. Takes an hour or so, but I have charcoal left unburned.

I've found reusing that "burned" charcoal to be not real good for cooks though. Doesn't seem to generate the same heat. This may be due to living in humid NC or the length of time between the cooks. But what I have found re-used charcoal to be good for is stocking my chimney starter. It burns well enough to start a bed of fresh charcoal and that gets the temps up properly.

Just noticed this weekend the inside tabs have gone missing on my 18.

I have only been reusing the charcoal for lighting chimneys and for grilling. If I am taking the time break out the WSM, I don't want charcoal to be my downfall.

Luis,

Throw the lid from your 22 OTS on the base of your WSM. It will shut down in no time.

I would check the door before I'd worry about the tabs on the vent. I think the door contributes more to air infiltration than anything else.

I agree with the limited use of use charcoal. I don't lite my chimney with it, but I would never try to do a cook without having mostly fresh charcoal. I just lay fresh on top after I shake the ring and knock off the ash ( I have my charcoal grate and my ring tied together - works great).
