Vent question on WSM?

Do the vents close completely? Even with the vents closed all the way there is till a very small opening where air can come and go? I called weber about being able to shut down my wsm until I put tin foil and a towel over my top vent to close it off. I put a light inside of the unit at night and one can clearly see light poking out of each vent. Has anyone really examined there's to see if it still leaves a small portion open when fully closed. The little tabs on each one stop it from going past the hole, supposedly to let one know it is closed, but of course it is not since the tab stops it too soon.

Anyway, weber sends me my third, yes third top,and it is no different than the first ones, number 1 was replaced for being out of round, number 2 for vent, and number is the same as 2... maybe I'll just saw the little stops off with a dremel.................................d

They may not close completely, I've never really noticed. I do know that with a properly fitting door and all vents closed that coals will be extinguished in about 40 mins. The key here is the properly fitting door which tends to get out of shape. Are you just trying to put out your coals?

Yep, trying to put out coals. Last cook it was still cooking 12 hours later though shut down. So far, its a POS. Ill fitting door, out of round, vents don't close,,,they "nearly" close. Joke so far. I've lost a great deal of confidence in web over this product.

Those little tabs will not keep your smoker lit. Your issue is most likely with the door. Just take some time and bend it into position. It will make a big difference.

Sooooo, POS door.....way to go weber on a $400 product that instantly needs reconfigured or replaced...nice.

I feel like we already went through this subject thoroughly in your previous thread, but let's take another swipe at it.

Take a look at this photo of a proper 22.5" lid vent: http://virtualweberbullet.com/parts_photos/22lid4.jpg The vents on the bowl should look exactly the same as this one.

Note that there is a little indentation on each of the tab stops. The indentation places the tab stop just outside of the circumference of the damper hole. In the closed position, the offset tab stop allows the damper holes to pass just barely past the holes in the lid, except for the thickness of that little tab.

Assuming that your dampers have indentations like this one, the thickness of those little tabs alone cannot possibly explain the problem you're having with shutting down the cooker. If your tabs don't look like this--if they are sticking into the circumference of the damper holes--then perhaps Weber is having a production problem with these dampers that should be brought to their attention.

As someone mentioned, a picture of what you're seeing would really help. You can even email one to me and I will post it for you. But as I stated in your other thread, it's more likely that the access door or a gap between the bowl and middle section are causing you all this frustration.

Regards,
Chris

David, these comments are best directed to Weber at 800-446-1071. You may have purchased a lemon, or it just may be that the 22.5" cooker does not meet your high standards of quality vs. your experience with other Weber products. It would be good for you to tell them directly. Perhaps they will give you a refund. Or maybe you can sell your cooker and find another more to your liking.

Good luck,
Chris

P.S. Looking back at some of your posts, I notice you said you've worked for corporations all your life. So you know how big companies work. Write a letter to the CEO and you may get some action.

In fact, I just finished an email to customer service, and that letter to the ceo is next if I get the same old tired answer.

I did not see your reply to the other thread until just now and I appreciate those comments. Since weber sent me yet another top, which is fact has bigger closed vent openings than the one I have, I might just get the dremel tool out and cut off those tags, and redo the thing better, thinking how to put proper stops on them.

I would have bought the Preformer had I not bought this, but still had my old charbroil that I just can't throw out yet, so figured I had a few cooks left in the old babe. I owned a smoker years ago, some cheap model I'm sure, and I don't recall ever having any problems with it except I left it outside uncovered all the time, and it finally rusted out.

Thanks again, Chris, your posts and comments that I've read are tops.......................d
