Used 18" Smoker

Hi everyone!

Happy 4th to everyone! I just bought my first smoker and found a great deal for a used one. My question is, since it's used...should I "clean" it somehow? Maybe fire it up without any meat?

Anyone buy a used one and do anything with it? Or did y'all just clean the grates and throw on some meat?

Thanks in advance y'all!

I would clean the whole smoker just for safety sake, but that's me. I'm also one of the few (or I might be the only one) who routinely cleans all of my Webers - inside and out.

I bought my 18.5 WSM used.

Brought out the sawhorses, slab of plywood and scrubbed her down with warm, soapy water (dish detergent).

Re-used the charcoal grate.
Used the lower cooking grate for a double charcoal grate in my 22.5 kettle....these grates are the same piece except the WSM version is plated.
Retired the upper WSM cooking grate.

Long story short, bought new cooking grates....went with the flip-up style from the 18.5 kettle.
This feature helps me fish my Maverick probes up top from the grommet port.

I'm with Mike on this one. Ive bought a used one and I cleaned it all up to look like new. Just makes it feel like its mine, plus you get to go through the process of seasoning it

Do a deep cleaning on the wsm. It won't hurt it plus you can have fun seasoning it again.

Thank you all! I appreciate the advice and the warm welcoming! I look forward to posting some pics of my meats :)
