Ultrasonic Cleaning

Being a bit tired of having to hand clean mixer parts in kerosene and don't even begin to hit me up after a day at the range having to clean up all the guns. My brother introduced me to using an ultrasonic cleaner. He dropped my little Bodyguard into a solution of warm water and simple green (about 50/50 IIRC). Told it to heat the water up to 50C and run for 20 minutes. Pulled the pieces out. Absolutely amazing. Ordered one over weekend and I will have it tomorrow. Got a customer machine on the bench just waiting for all the little parts and pieces to be cleaned and also 4 of my weapons needing a good clean. Can't wait to try it out.
I would think one of the larger models might come in handy for you guys doing lots of grill refurbs/flipping. I don't so only needed a 6.5L one like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08B3DWFV5/?tag=tvwb-20
But they make some pretty large ones I would think might be great and time/labor savers

I have one that is used for gun parts. I find myself using it mostly to clean my glasses. Not the intended use, but it really works

Reminds me. Gotta clean my guns. They been just sitting around for a year or so, but I do like to keep them clean and oiled just in case.

Thanks Larry, been looking at these casually for years for some of my things that go boom. Might have to splurge.

The one my brother has is basically one of the generic Made in China ones. Looks just like the one I linked. They're sold under various names but are likely all the same unit. Anyway we took my little Bodyguard .380 apart (just a field strip) it was filth BTW. 20 minutes, rinsed it blew it clean and hit it with CLP all over and some regular oil on the rails. Smooth like snot on a door knob :D
I will post how mine works. I have a mixer on the bench and 4 other "boomers" waiting since their last range trip. I will try to post photos of the mixer parts of before and after.

I picked up a little ultrasonic cleaner for like $6 at a second hand store. It worked, but was not powerful enough for my needs (crusty musical instrument parts and mouthpieces) so I got rid of it. The bigger ones in the Amazon link above also have more cleaning power and may be able to remove tougher gunk than the smaller ones.

I cringe thinking about the "gunk" in there..................................YUK

Back in the 90s I closed down a company shop and we moved to another state and I inherited a small 1.5 to 2 gallon cleaner we used on aircraft small parts. I have cleaned carburetors, gun parts etc in it for years. Works fine . New ones are much better and larger.

An old German watchmaker buddy of mine used to use a beaker of the solution and set the beaker in the tank when he cleaned watch bracelets, that way you don’t contaminate the entire tank with all that revolting gunk. He saved a lot in solution that way. I have made up a beaker and set that in the tank filled with nothing more than water if I only have a couple of small parts to clean. I learned a LOT from that guy.

Well it just arrived. I will do an unboxing with photos and follow up with full tryout. Not likely this afternoon but if not tomorrow for sure. I did a cursory look though not a full unboxing. Seems pretty impressive. I will throw some mixer parts in it tomorrow as well to demo it. Curious how many cleanings the solution can be used for. Maybe the instructions......................I'll see

OK this may take 2 posts not sure. But, this is unboxing, and some KitchenAid parts as first cleaning. My cleaning agent was Simple Green diluted about 30% (IOW 70% water and 30% SG). I purposely did not wipe the parts down I wanted this to be a real test. I ran water temp to 45C (113F) and ran them about 35 minutes. I think for heavily greased things like these items running to full closer to full temp of 80C (175F) and stronger solution would be the ticket. But I have to say I am pretty satisfied with it. Maybe should have bought a larger one? IDK. We shall see. As you can see it comes pretty well equipped. Video links here too
FWIW the mic on the camera really seems to accentuate the sound. It's really nowhere near as loud or harsh as the video leads you to believe

Nice size, looks to have cleaned up those parts well with no expensive chemicals. So what does one like this set you back if I may ask Larry.

My first Glock was a used Gen2 G21, .45ACP. I took apart the gun to check it out, and could not find one speck of dirt, fouling, or carbon anywhere inside, even in the deepest of crevices. I always suspected that they used an ultrasonic unit to clean it and get it that spotless.
