Trying lump?

I have had my WSM for about 15 months now. Started with Kingsford for the first few cooks because that was all I knew. Bought a whole bunch of OCC Rancher last fall because of info on this site. After a summer of cooking, I'm about out of Rancher. (I absolutely love it by the way.) If I can't find any more Rancher in the next few months, I'll have to change.

Was thinking about moving to lump. While looking in the local stores, all I have found is Cowboy lump and Royal Oak lump. My local Costco hasn't carried OCC lump like some other areas of the country. I have read enough on this site to know that Cowboy lump pretty much sux. It seems like RO lump is ok and quite a few on this board use it.

My basic question: Is RO lump a good enough product for me to switch to?

Thanks for any info.

Lee, It's a good lump. Not the best IMO, but I use it when I'm out of Humphrey's. Never found or had anything to complain about with RO Lump.

around here there is only cowboy,RO,kingsford charwood and big green egg lumps. cowboy is junk, but imo still better than any briquette. charwood is just ok but over priced at 7+ bucks a 10# bag. BGE lump is like 19 bucks for a 20# bag here and is just RO in a different package. RO is 5.5 a 10# bag and is really good.

I've said this before, no more cowboy for me. Hardwood flooring was in my last bag and the bags are so full of small pieces it's stupid.

You can find lump in the most obscure places. I finally found a connection for Humphries lump locally. I buy it from the local steel supplier. The guy there said they sell it to a couple of local drive-thru's. I think a 20# bag of hump lump will last as long as 2 20# bags of charcoal.

I have used RO lump and like it. I just don't think it lasts as long as some and makes lots of ash. Before I found my humphries connection I would buy Frountier lump. It has some bigger pieces but I liked everything else about it.

Lee, check this out. If I ever have a question about quality of a certain brand of lump I check the naked whiz site.

BTW Bry, I see your Dragon's Breath lump scored quite high.

i have had iffy quality issues with RO lump. i have found all sorts of trash and debris in the bag including filter material of some sort even once a hunk of plastic. some folks have no issues with RO lump and it mey be that the walmart in my town just buys the shoddier bags or bad luck.

at any rate i switched back to kingsford as RO is the only lump in my area

I am only on my 10th bag of RO, but the worst thing I found was a baseball sized rock. That was sitting on my charcoal grate after a overnighter. I found a couple of pieces of wood that were not completely charred. But nothing close to what Jon stated. All of my bags were purchased at WalMart.

The only widely available charcoal around where I live is Kingsford briqs and Cowboy lump. I echo what a lot of people have said about Cowboy, it is junk. I'm pretty happy with the RO lump. It really does burn just like the BGE lump, at a lower cost.

I stay away from Cowboy, BGE brand is ok but as stated here before VERY expensive. I like royal oak a lot, and have had good luck with GFS as well (Gordon Food Service) Rarely use Kingsford or any other briquettes anymore.

Just remember if using on a WSM that with lump, you need to take a little more time to arrange your coals if you're doing Minion method. because of the irregular shape you don't get as much into the coal ring unless you kind of arrange it to avoid big open spaces. Fist couple of times I used it I found myself being awakened early by the ET-73 cause I was losing temp

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>Thanks Dann, I was curious about that and figured I'd pack it tight when I try lump.
