Tried something new on a rehab

I am glad I found this. That Q looks great!

I have a Weber Q I am going to be bringing back to life for my daughter (and teaching her how to grill on it), and I wanted to spruce up the lid! I don't like the plain old white. What did you do to prepare the lid for painting it? Blast it, or just give it a good cleaning and sanding?

Sorry for the late reply! I sanded down the lid and cookbox. Washed with mineral spirits afterwards to be sure it was a nice clean surface for the paint. No paint inside, ever. The lid I was more careful to get all the paint off, otherwise you didn't get a uniform finish. There will be some smooth and some slightly textured spots and that doesn't look as nice. For the bottom I really focused the most on the areas in plain view. The harder to sand areas around the mounts is nearly impossible without sandblasting. I have some it before with my small hobby grade blaster, but I felt it was not worth the effort on a daily use grill. And that VHT caliper paint really seems to hold up great. I did have to cure it properly afterwards, there are specific instructions on the can. A series of heat and cool cycles, but the results are worth it! Have fun and show us how it goes!

I didn't see this thread back in the fall. Love how you did the logo (y) .

I haven't had the nerve to try that on my never finished CharQ project. I think I would like to do that and then make the kettle red against the black lid color and pick up the red I used on the bottom.
