Tri Tip or Top Sirloin??

Both are somewhat on sale for us this week. I personally like top sirloin for steaks but very rarely get to see (and have never had) tri tip. Just not available here (Toronto area) very often if at all.

Tri tip choice is $7 / lb
Top sirloin choice is $4 / lb

Question: what's the better buy, both from a flavour and tenderness POV??

I also like the tri-tip though it is expensive here in Newfoundland - around $25/kg vs $16/kg for top sirloin, don't exactly remember top sirloin price. I do like the top sirloin for roast and steak.

Go for the tri tip once. You can make the determination for yourself which you like more since you've been having top sirloin. Get a whole tri tip roast which will weigh about 2-2.5 lbs as opposed to tri tip cut into steaks.

i agree. i prefer tri tip myself. but once you have one, you can make the decision for yourself. i also agree that buying a whole tri tip roast is better than when cut into steaks but the taste is pretty much the same. the only thing i find about it being cut up into steaks is that seems easier to overcook due to being in smaller sections as compared to a whole roast. and one thing is for sure.......you NEVER want to overcook a tri tip.

OK so you've convinced me :D

I already got the top sirloin but I'll try for the tri tip today.

Tks for the input.

I've never seen a tri tip so I would definitely try it out.

Me either and me too. They are not popular up here but I asked my butcher about them and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He can get them so this fall I'm going to order one to see what they are all about. He did not know what a flat iron steak was. I'm thinkin I'd like to try one or two.

Hey Len,

Did you ever do the tri-tip ? How did it turn out for you ?

I've been special ordering from my butcher from time to time for this cut and just picked up a couple this week. Plan on doing one tonight.

Before I've used the Tequila Lime tri tip recipe in the Beef Recipe section, with much success. Tonight I will just coat with a wet rub for a while then cook.

The 2 most important things I have found is 1) don't over cook, and 2) determine where the grain of the meat is before cooking. This helps afterwards because it's an angular cut of meat and the direction of the grain changes as you move along. You need that roast cut across the grain, otherwise it's a chewy piece of meat.

Great flavour though.

:(

They were out of stock when I went so I got a rain check for 2 and just haven't been back to get the order filled. What I'm afraid of though is that sometimes these stores have a product available as a "one off" and never stock it again.

Tri-tip is seldom if ever available here and I'm afraid that might be the case here.

Don't know until I visit there again (not my normal store to shop at).

That's too bad, I hope they come thru for you. I have mine slathered in a wet rub, to be grilled for dinner tonight.

If I get my act together, I may be able to post some pics later on.
