Throwdown advice

Some friends in the neighborhood and I are planning to do a friendly throwdown over Labor Day weekend. There are five couples involved. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how we can pull this off so that we can reasonably compare our entries without everybody cooking the same thing. That would be boring, since this is ultimately a party. However, it is tough to compare chicken vs. brisket vs. pulled pork.

Maybe just keep it casual and have everyone vote on categories kind of like BBQ judging... Best Presentation, Best Flavor, Best Texture/Preparation of the item, Favorite Overall. Everyone gets to cook what they want, and just like a potluck each person will have a preference of one thing or another.

It sounds like a real fun time. I wish I had other friends who were as into cooking as I am who would go for something like that. I'd keep it very un-scientific and just roll with it. Good luck!
