I also do the lit on top. I already have a chimney,so it's easy to just light a few coals and dump 'em.

After filling charcoal I simply use a small trowel and push back the coals in the middle and make a pocket in the center with maybe 1 layer left on the bottom and dump the lit coals in there. Always works great.

That's pretty much what I do. I feel like the fire starts better if you have the lit coals in a pile versus spreading them out across the top of the pile. A can seems like over kill and a little too much effort for the same effect as a small pile.
