The Adapt-a-Damper - Open Source Project

UPDATE 27/03/16: Designed a swappable box for V2 to house the TC board developed by John B.

UPDATE 19/02/16: Added a version of the V2 to fit the "official" Delta fan. It's called Bottomcase_V2_Delta. Same Thingiverse link.

UPDATE 16/01/16:

By request from a few forum members, I've created a two hole damper design, which is angular around the center of rotation. There are certain advantages to this over the "smiley face" opening in that it's opening is linear. If the HM tells it to open 34%, it opens 34%. Also, the overall cross sectional area of the opening is greater by 46% over the previous design, which may aid in running a "damper only" configuration. The files are posted with the original design here ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1194140

I've also released a 15 CFM version without the box on Thingiverse here ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1272011

And, soon to come, will be a "swappable" box option to house the TC adapter board developed by John B. and RalphTrimble. I'm just waiting on the board and some components to do some mock-ups.

In an effort to create effective fan/damper units, I fell in love with Ralph Trimble's design http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?46004-INTRODUCING-the-quot-Roto-Damper-quot, Although awesome, I felt the need to make something more public as this is the reasoning behind this forum, an open source project that can be shared by all.

I give you the fully open source, and interactive project ... The Adapt-a-damper.

The 1st design includes an interchangeable box with just a keystone cutout. It can be modified to an infinite variety of possibilities as it is dovetailed (of sorts) to the main body and removeable/replaceable/interchangeable.

The files can be found here ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1194140

It's my intention to have all involved in this forum to expand upon the design as you see fit, and share your mods with the community. Great wishes to all.

Cheers,
W

looks great! One of my ideas is to "cram" a nodemcu/arduino mini or even just the esp8266 chip and mini within a small fan design enclosure. No display/buttons but will be controlled via wifi (local or internet, or bluetooth when their new chip comes)....

thanks for sharing...

You mean steal a damper? I have shared my files with anyone who wants to print them for THEMSELVES, the only people I have refused to give my files to are those that want to go into business printing and selling the units. I just don't see how I am obligated to aid someone else in starting up a business on the back of my hard work?

I have spent well over a year, probably close to two, developing and perfecting the Roto Damper design, the RDTC board and techniques to run the thing over the CAT5 cable. I have posted about it and shared the info here in the forum along the way, so the public record of who developed this damper system you are pirating is here for all to see. The very least you could have done was to come up with something original, but I guess you don't have the ingenuity to do that or you would have. Weren't you the guy that asked for my files and at the same time said, and I paraphrase, "it is similar to the ideas I have in my head but my imaginary damper is way better than yours", and you wonder why I didn't give you my files? It's not the best approach to insult someone when you are asking for their work! LOL

What you are doing is unethical and I urge anyone who needs a damper to review the Roto Damper sticky thread, which is a sticky thread because I was the one who did the hard work to develop this damper. You will clearly see this is design is a rip off of my work. I am doing my level best to take the high road here but I will not sit back and watch you do this without making a comment.

I Concur, Ralph.

If you want the real deal, review the sticky here http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?46004-INTRODUCING-the-quot-Roto-Damper-quot. but if you want to be involved in the bigger picture, and want to contribute to an open source project, then download my files, improve upon my mistakes, and make it even better. I am pirating an idea. I'm not, however, using this venue for capital gain. I originally came to this site to learn, and contribute where I can.I thought that was what this site was all about.

I will NOT be selling these for the main reason I feel it VERY unethical to do so on this venue. I will, however, make all my files public as an open source, free and available resource.

I urge all to expand upon the design so all can profit here with great tasting, awesome BBQ.

I love that idea! I had it in my head to do a full box to house the HM, But with your ESP8266 work, it just may be the way to go. Thanks for your ideas, mate! Oh, and I'm doing a cook later today dedicated to the ESP. I'll keep you posted.

WBegg,

This is exactly the kind of reply that would make a sensible person be put off by whatever you are trying to do here. I'm not saying you're a bad guy. I don't know you outside of what seems like a bunch of pushy posts I've read here over the past few months. I'm also not trying to insert myself into your damper situation, but I want you to realize that I think you are going about your business completely wrong. I was the new guy on the block back in the summer and Ralph has been nothing but helpful from the get go. I'm sure you've read the Roto Damper sticky and can see he's on version 3. He's clearly been working with the community to improve his design. Instead of trying to split the audience on your "idea" of a damper, I think it would be in everyone's best interest for you to back off with your trolling, and at the very least, do what you can (not sure how) to make peace with Ralph and assure the drama stays out of this board. I have enough drama in my life that I take sweet, sweet, BBQ refuge visiting these pages.

What I'm trying to do here? I'm trying to make ideas public for the masses here on the forum. To introduce ideas so the masses can expand upon it. I agree that Ralph has spent ALOT of time on his design, but would it be just as wrong if I added a component to Mr. Mayland's board design and shared it here on the forum? Probably not (OSH Park. Search Heatermeter). My design has flaws, Ralphs design is proven. Let's all get together and make the ultimate damper, instead of whining about "you copied my idea!" . It's a forum, mates. A place to share ideas, not a place to strut egos.

We need more people like Brian and David (http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?63059-Espress-for-HeaterMeter-Module-(wifi-with-no-Pi-Linkmeter-needed) and Tom Kole who posts new ideas and gets everyone involved in making a product for all to share in.

Paraphrased well! I'm pretty sure it was something about "I have ideas to expand on the design". Thought I was speaking to someone that wanted to collaborate on an idea.

Noticed that since I posted, I already have 5 downloads. I urge those downloaders to respond with likes and dislikes, and if capable, copy and modify as you see fit for advantages/improvements.

Let's all share.

Lets be real here, you have not "created" and shared anything here, you have taken what I have done and copied it. I have shared and contributed much to this forum, including the original Roto Damper, the RD3, as well as several other designs like the ping pong valve, the "air burner", colaborated with John Bostwick to create the Aux Thermocouple (RDTC) board in addition to making contributions to the HM hardware and software designs. I have answered thousands of emails helping people work out their heatermeter and damper issues, regardless of whether they are running my roto damper or not. So please don't insult me with your talk about improving the HM and sharing.

Dominick, I appreciate you speaking in support of me here and the sentiment you have expressed. The last time Mr. Begg waged a PM and forum assault on me we had an exchange where we seemed to have made peace, but now I understand that he was just smiling in my face while intending to stab me in the back with this. So be it I guess, but I don't have to allow him to do it without having my say and presenting the facts in the matter.

Ralph will be happy to SELL you one for a fee.
Ralph has been happy to GIVE the files to print the original Roto Damper or the RD3 as long as your intent is not to print and SELL them, though I do reserve the right to not share my files with someone who insults me while requesting them.

Just found this as well. I see no mention of Brian, which is a shame. They are selling a 3D printed version of my damper design, though. Kudos to them. I have no issues with that. That's why I posted the files.

Geeze that was fast... seems like some sort of orchestrated shell game you are playing here to get around the my desire to prevent the commercial exploitation of my design. Would that be shameless or shameful behavior? IDK, but it's certainly not a representation of honest hard work and good ideas on your part. It is thievery on behalf of you both, though I somehow suspect you are one and the same.... and big time thievery at that, selling it for $75. This is not a place to advertise commercial products as dictated by the administrator of this forum, so you are stepping over several lines with the piracy and commercialism you are engaged in here.

If anyone deems it unethical to download the files I've supplied, then don't. I'm getting a bit tired of angering the Damper God.

I thought I was doing this forum a favor. By Ralph's response, I guess not.

Cheers,
W

OK, beggie thief. I hope to hell you are not tired already, because you have riled me enough to harass you at least as much as you have harassed me, and I have a long way to go to meet the bar you have set... and don't insult me with your talk doing favors, the only thing you are after is the commercial exploitation of my design, plain and simple. You can try to hide behind your good guy doing favors routine all you want, doesn't change the fact that you are an unethical thief.

And I will state again, this forum is not a place for commercial products to be discussed.

I COMPLETELY Agree. I never said you have not contributed, and I was blatant to say My design (that I made on my computer with my $800 license of Rhino) is "based" on your ideas. The box mounts differently, The dimensions I have no idea, because you don't share your files, the keystone jack is different, It was designed around a Sunon fan, not the Delta. I'm not selling it! So Why are you so upset about me giving it away for free? Did I upset your ego or your bank account? for the sake of this being an open source forum, I would hope the ego thing, and not money lost.

You upset neither my ego or bank account, as this is not a commercial enterprise on my part. I CREATED something that bettered the HM, you made a carbon copy and are attempting to call it your own. There isn't a person on this planet that would look at "your" design and my RD3 and disagree with that statement, unless of coarse he is a part of your "posse".

So I'm a commercial thief? So I posted files for all to share and I'm a thief? I'm having a really hard time understanding this. I gave potential customers free files for them to do what they will with them, print themselves, or maybe expand upon a design. Then I'm going to turn around and try to sell them something they already have. Hmmmmmmm. Sounds like a good Business plan to me!

Again, I Completely agree, Ralph! I have never NOT referenced you in my design. I will call it a blatant ripoff of your design. No worries. I just posted the files for the people here on the forum that would enjoy printing their own. or taking the design to a service to have it done. Mate, this is OPEN SOURCE! It's all about sharing! And ultimately smoking some great BBQ! If I can help make that happen, then I've done my job.

P.S. YES, it's a blatant ripoff of the RD3 design. Ralph is the Damper God.
