The 10 Best BBQ Chain Restaurants in the America

I can honestly say that Calhoun's has good barbecue. I have eaten at 3 of their locations in Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg. It is consistent at each one. Calhoun's on the river in Knoxville is across the street from Neyland stadium. The home of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. (GO BIG ORANGE!!!) Great game day atmosphere and the most unique tailgating on the planet when the Vol Navy arrives on the Tennessee river. That is a tradition of fans that arrive via water by driving their boats up or down the river to get to the game. They tie up to each other and walk across the other boats to get to the dock. All kinds of smoking and grilling goes on!!!

If any of ya'll are in East Tennessee, give Calhoun's a try. Highly recommend the pretzels w/ beer cheese and the smokehouse salad. The ribs are really good, and so is the chicken.

They are partnered with Smoky Mountain Brewery which does some in house brewing if you like custom brewskis.

We are getting a Dickey's in Johnson City, TN. I will have to try it when it opens.

None of these places exist around here. There are just two or possibly 3 places that are BBQ restaurants overall.

If we want BBQ we have to make it ourselves.

Jim and Nicks is good. They do tons if catering too, one time at work we got their smoked turkey sandwich for completing a fire drill - they were outside the building.

We have access to three close by BBQ restaurants (all chains) of some note. I rank them according to quality (in reverse order):

3- Smokey Bones
2 - City BBQ (chain started in Columbus, Ohio by BBQ enthusiasts)
1 - SmoQ (a recent and excellent addition to the area)
The BEST - The Little Red Brick Restaurant (where MY WSM's are located:wsm:)

We DO (all of us) have a distinct advantage. We KNOW what WE like and can personalize our favorites. That gives us a big advantage over commercial products even if the commercial stuff is good. The disadvantage is that we have to do it (and that takes time - and sometimes a LOT of time). Like my Pappy told me, everything is a trade off... As long as I am able, I WILL make the effort!

Keep on smokin',
