In October 2024, Mrs. TVWB and I spent a week playing tourist in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, including visits to two famous barbecue joints: Cattleack BBQ in Dallas and Goldee's BBQ in Fort Worth.

And whenever I'm in that area, I've got to make a stop at an H-E-B Supermarket. They've got an amazing selection of products, and especially when it comes to beef they have lots of cuts that you just don't find easily in supermarkets here in California. I brought home a couple of USDA Prime brisket poinra, some H-E-B Pitmaster bacon, some dry-cured bacon, some pecan-smoked bacon from a brand called Better Than Good out of Austin, an H-E-B bacon called Hayride that's seasoned with real pumpkin and pumpkin spice flavors, a couple of barbecue sauces, some HEB-branded canned goods, some Saint Arnold root beer from Houston, a bunch of snacks, and even some warm butter flour tortillas from the bakery that we consumed directly from the bag in the car out in the parking lot...so cravable!

But what really surprised us was the deliciousness of the TX-sized sliced brisket sandwich we tried at True Texas BBQ--right inside the supermarket!

H-E-B started adding barbecue restaurants to some of its supermarkets in 2014 and currently has 37 of these joints in various locations, most with inside seating, to-go service, and drive-thru ordering. Some are without the drive-thru and a few are just to-go service. They smoke barbecue fresh daily right on the premises, and Texas Monthly magazine says that True Texas BBQ is the best chain barbecue restaurant in the state.

I've got to tell you we both agreed that it was one of the most delicous brisket sammies we've ever tasted--and we've tasted a lot of them! The meat was tender as a mother's love, great crust, nicely seasoned, piled high, properly sliced across the grain, with just a touch of mild barbecue sauce, on a big soft bun. We gobbled it down and couldn't believe the quality of that sandwich!

As for the price, the basic sliced brisket sandwich sold for $8.79, upgrading to TX-size cost us an additional $5.50 which got us double the meat and a larger bun.

I don't know if the barbecue at True Texas BBQ is always this good or if the other meats are as good as the brisket we had, but we will definitely try it again if we have the opportunity in the future.

While browsing the extensive selection of barbecue sauces and rubs, I struck up a conversation with a local who share that the Plano location is one of the newer and larger H-E-B supermarkets, so if you have a choice, seek out one of the big, new locations and you'll be amazed at what you find there. Sure wish I had an H-E-B near me., I'd be a happy man!

Hutchins

Well...I was driving, so no beer in the H-E-B parking lot. Don't want to get a DUI while out of state!🚔

Don't know if you saw my other posts, but we enjoyed world-class barbecue at Cattleack BBQ in Dallas and Goldee's BBQ in Fort Worth. We'll be back for more at some point down the road. Enjoyed some Shiners out at Luckenbach...and a few other places. :D🍻

BTW, your first post! Thank you!
