Summit S-620 NG 2010

Hey there...my first post I'm a newbie on this site. My name is Ken and I'm from Canada. We love our Webers up here too!

I have a little experience restoring Webers…my 2001 Genesis Silver C (NG), which I picked up about 9 years ago for $40. At the time I bought new burners, bars, etc, and recently cleaned her up and updated with a new cookbox and lid on warranty, courtesy of the fine people at Weber.

But that restoration was a walk in the park compared to the Summit S-620 (NG) I'm now working on. What a beast!

I had a 10-year old 18' WSM that I traded for the Summit. I loved my WSM, but it was just sitting in the yard as I much prefer grilling. This Summit grill was in really rough shape. The bottom, sides and back panels were completely rusted out. Some worse than others but all needed to be replaced. Side table, Side burner, doors, lid, grease tray, pan and pan holder were the only salvageable parts. Bars are fine, burners were completely clogged but are OK, and the grates are OK. Other than that, it’s an all new rebuild!

Here's a quick pick I'll update as I go. Hope to provide some useful info on warranties, paint, parts etc!

Welcome, Ken! You definitely have your work cut out for you to rehab the grill. Looking forward to seeing your progress photos.

Hey Ken,

Welcome to TVWBB. Yeah, you definitely bit off a big bite. If you were to read my past posts, you would find that I am not a fan of this model, having given up myself on doing anything with not one, but TWO 6 burner examples. They went to my non-profit's scrap metal collection, and all I have to show for it are some nice grates, therrmometers and a few other salvageable pieces.

Many issues with these grills, and you have already identified quite a few. Assuming you can't do major metal fabrication, I am guessing you are planning on buying a bunch of replacement cabinetry and frame pieces. That has to be really pricey. Then there is the serious issue of burn-through on the firebox. Before you spend any money on cabinet parts make a careful inspection of the front of the firebox. If you see anything like this, you need to take stock and consider the whole cost this project might take and maybe cut your losses before going any further:

I am honestly not intending to be over-dramatic or unnecessarily negative. It is true, though, these grills are large, complicated and expensive to maintain. A thorough restoration is a BIG job and will take some serious effort and $. Having said that, if you have the desire, time and resources, you will in the end have a powerhouse grill that I am sure will cook extremely well. I would just have to question whether it will be cost effective vs. buying something new like a Genesis II SE-325.

Hey Jon! thanks for the info I appreciate it. I did see your post about the Summit 600 series cookbox issues (and other issues).

I'm almost breaking even on this restoration, and these grills sell for about $3000 up here with tax, so it's a no-brainer.

I have to say though this is a lot of work! I don't think it was ever covered or cleaned, and we get a lot of snow up here.

More carnage:

Here's a shot of the bottom panel, which was destroyed :

Bill I don't know what you've got into this thing $$$$ wise. Looking at the fire box photos I would tell you don't go over board, as that thing is about on the verge of complete Swiss cheese. You might get one more season out of it

Hey there...are you referring to Jon's photo of the cookbox above? I think he was just showing me an example of how the front panel can rust out. I'm replacing the cookbox on mine with a new one on warranty.

Update on Summit S-620 NG Side Burner Table

All done. Lots of Logastina powdered SS cleaner and lots of elbow grease.

I have to say I am not a fan of the NG bulkhead on this grill. It's meant to screw into the back RHS of the frame, but it's awkward. So much so that I ended up breaking off the gas line to the Side Table Burner. The good folks at Weber were kind enough to send me a new one for free. They really are unbelievable, but more on that later.

The rod for the lid was missing, but I had one from a Genesis 300 series 2008 model. Thinner rod than the Summit but does the job just fine.

The Control Knob was fine, and the ignitor works. Like all of the SS parts on this grill, there was no corrosion and I’m very happy with how it turned out. As bad as it looked, it’s in great shape.

Here's the cleaner. This is a great SS cleaner.

Yep sure is. I don't know why Weber is not making Cast Aluminum cookboxes across the board for all grills. There must be a reason?

Rustoleum HH Ultra Silver on the Grease Pan Holder

Here's a look at the painted steel grease pan holder. I was surprised that it was not rusted out like the other painted steel components. I decided to paint it with Rustoleum HH Ultra Silver. It took about 4 coats. It looks amazing.

Of course it doesn't match the original darker grey of the other grill components, but its close enough for me. It also fairly closely matches the large SS grease tray, so it's not as jarring.

I'll let you know how the paint holds up over time.

The aluminum grease pan and large SS grease tray were cleaned with Logastina SS cleaner. Great stuff.

Wow, it is all looking great. I see a lot of new parts. If you are willing to share, about how much do you have into this project? My opinion has been that these grills are not feasible to restore for resale. Personal use is a whole different ball game and really comes down to the value you place on it. Of course that needs to be compared to purchasing something similar brand new.

It does look good. However, on the grease pans, I don't think the High Heat spray is necessary. You might have been able to choose from some other shades of gray if you had gone with some of the more conventional spray paints, you might have found one closer to the original color. Although, the high heat stuff might have some properties that allow it to hold up to the grease better than conventional paint.

Ken, I'm taking the liberty of embedding your pictures into the post. I did this by clicking on the "share" link and copying the BBcode in it.

Yes Jon lots of new parts! Here's the breakdown with part numbers. Note that these are Canadian prices (35% more than US) BUT heavily discounted courtesy of Weber...so it all evens out.

Subtotal: $418.55

Estimated Tax: $57.67

Grand Total: $501.22

Weber also threw in a new set of 13 SS flav bars, and a new control panel. I will have a detailed post about the CP when it comes in. Very interesting design issue.

So for me, this grill is a keeper. It is practically new now and is almost done. But even if I bought it to flip, I'm sure I could get at least $1200 or more for it. I saw a new 4 burner Summit today at the depot - $2849. Mind you it had the IR burner and fold down rotisserie, but still.

Would I do it again? It's been a TON of work cleaning the grates, burners, lid, side tables and doors. I also cleaned 12 of the flav bars before being offered the new set LOL. To flip it, I wouldn't bother. To keep it and enjoy it, definitely!

Hey Bruce thanks! Can you suggest a paint type/colour?

I only painted the grease pan holder, not the large and small pans, which cleaned up well and did not need painting. I agree with you that I probably could have matched the colour, but I'm thinking anything I can paint with rustoleum HH I will. I painted the insides of the frame bars (can't see it), and I'm even considering painting the inside of the doors with silver rustoleum. They are not HQ SS and are definitely going to rust. Still undecided tho.

I agree that you could probably get by with a regular Rustoleum or Krylon gray paint. But, even though I am kind of a purist, I actually like the Silver. It ties in with the drip pan. Just my observation.
