Stubbs Charcoal

Lowes in the Northern Va area have Stubbs 15 pound bags for $5.00. This has been a good charcoal for me.

I think they're on sale nation wide through Monday. There's another thread here about it (that I cannot find at the moment.)

Thanks for the tip. I immediately went to my closest Lowes and found three bags left, one torn. Snagged the good two.

They looked on the computer and said they had no more in the back or on order. Two other stores in the area were shown as down to 11 and 19 bags.

I guess Stubbs is a lot more popular around here than I knew, especially when you figure a lot of people probably stocked up on charcoal last weekend when Kingsford was on sale.

How do you guys think this stuff stacks up against Trader Joes? I've been using TJ's for two summers now. I've had full rings burn at 250-300 for over 36 hours. (Bottom vents closed with one cracked & top vent open with one whole plugged with a wine cork with a hole for temp probe)

Was at the Lowes in Gainesville at 7 this morning and the spot where the Stubbs normally is was empty.

Picked up 15 bags today... an associate at Lowe's came over and asked if I wanted a pallet of it. Offered to shrink wrap it for me. Didn't think it would fit in the Maxima.

I did not pick any up this time as I still have over 10 bags left from their last big 2 for $8.49 sale back in March.

I went to my local Lowes on Friday. There were only 3 bags left, so I grabbed them all. At the register, the cashier said that since one bag was damaged, she would only charge 1/2 price ($2.50) for it! A bottom corner was torn and had been repaired with packing tape. I didn't even notice it until she pointed it out.

I had been waiting months for this sale, but didn't manage to buy any. I thought about swinging by Lowes after work, but the way traffic looked, the trip alone would have taken well over an hour. Sigh.....next time.

Steve,

Stubbs is briquettes, but they are "all natural" meaning they are only made of wood (sawdust) and binders. This is different than "regular" briquettes (like the blue bag Kingsford) which uses coal, limestone, and some other stuff in there. The all wood stuff (like lump and all natural briquettes) makes less ash because it has less additives that don't burn. I also think it burns "cleaner" and makes better Q.

Matt,

Sounds pretty good, especially the low ash part. I've been using K blue and have been happy with it but disposing of the ashes is a pain.

I'll look around and give Stubb's a shot.

Thanks,
Steve

Stubbs charcoal will remain my favorite. However, for grilling anything that takes under an hour or so, I can't tell the difference between Stubbs and Kingsford. So, I'll still be buying whichever of the two is on sale - I'll "save" my Stubbs for the long cooks but will continue to use Kingsford for general use. That is, unless I find Stubbs at a good price when I need more...

This was the first time I tried Stubbs. I really like it. Stubbs is my new favorite along with Humpherys HARDWOOD BRIQUETS and 100% NATURAL HARDWOOD BRIQUETS.

When Stubbs went on sale earlier this year, my wife thought I was kidding when I said I was planning on buying 20 bags of Stubbs. Ha ha, soon after I backed down the driveway, she realized I was serious! Short cooks or overnight smokes, it's Stubbs an Stubbs alone in my grills and smokers! It burns hotter, burns longer, and less ash build up!
If you're gonna buy the best grills to cook on, buy the best cuts of meat to eat, why would you not spend a little more and use a superior charcoal to cook it with?
Just my 2 cents worth.
Tim

Never heard of Stubbs 'till I read it here. I booked down to my local Lowes on the last day of the sale. Snagged 5 bags. Used the entire bag and added mesquite chips in my 18" WSM on this 12.5 pound packer cut brisket. Cooked it at 210 degrees for 14 hours. No tending the pit was necessary. Still had plenty of coals for a longer cook it needed.

This was the best brisket to come of my WSM yet.

Jeff;
As I looked at your brisket, I realized that I had a smile on my face. While the whole world eats at MacDonald's, we FEAST!

We are either awful lucky or some kind of enlightened. Frankly, I don't care which!
