As promised, here is my report:
After two days of soaking in PB sinus clearer - I mean Blaster - I was happy to find that my valve screws had shed their rust and were now pretty easy to remove. So, this grill - for a friend - got the full valve lubrication. It was very nice to hear those quiet clicks at each position

However, I am glad to have learned about the ATF method and will definitely try it out. PB Blaster can't always free things up, so better to lubricate what you can then to ruin a valve.
