Starting my lonnng awaited 91 Genesis restoration.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I really appreciate it! Oh yes, this is going to be a keeper. I know the “new” look won’t last long. Not going to tell the story that I mentioned in the start of this thread yet but I have a few special long awaited pics of the weber family to take. It won’t be much longer.

Once again this slow progress continues. It’s been at snail’s pace BUT it still moves forward. Today I assembled the left side shelves. Slats are red oak.

I do have a question for you guys. What did weber use to mount the swing out shelf? Is it just a 1/4” rod with threads on each end? 1/4-20 threaded rod with acorn or lock nuts? It eas missing on my genesis when I got it.

Thanks!

I have (what I believe to be) a 1989 Genesis 3 and a 1990 Genesis 3. Both are missing the hardware for the swing up table on the left hand side and both predate the horizontal slide bar.

I'm wondering if there are good pics in threads tagged genny 1..5

Those slats look really good Kevin and your spacing is perfect, that's almost the hardest thing to get right! I also noticed your stainless steel Zbars, good to know RcPlanebuyer is still making those.

All of my 1994-1999 grills came with rods with a hole drilled about a quarter inch or so from one end, with no apparent purpose.
I can see now that a cotter pin retains it in the early units and they just continued using them .until they were all gone

Thanks Steve. I have learned alot here from you guys and I'd like to share a little tip myself if anyone is looking to make life easier drilling the screw holes almost perfect each time ... and fairly quick as well

you can make an easy simple jig from a few pieces of scrap wood, a good square and in my case, a scrap piece of old vinyl floor tile.

Square up two side sticks against a back stop leaving a semi-snug fit to slide each slat until it hits the back stop. The small vinyl strip was attached to the two outer sticks with clamps. Get your measurements from your z brackets and transfer to the vinyl strip (or whatever you have available. Just make sure its durable to withstand wearing out as you drill out 60 screw holes) Once you drill your template hole do a trial on a scrap piece to make sure everything is lined up. I had to loosen up the clamps a tad and tap the vinyl template over a nudge a few times until I was centered with the width of each slat. THIS is one thing you want to get exact the first time. If you are a 1/16' off from center on one end and you flip the stick around to drill, you will be 1/16 off center in the opposite direction making you an 1/8' off overall from end to end.

15 min set up time and you'll knock out 30 sticks in no time

Assembled the frame today and mounted the firebox. I didn’t care for the matte black so I coated with high heat ultra. Much better IMO.

The new wood slats will get a few coats of finish tomorrow. Almost there!
