Yes!!! That does work with “many” bothersome critters, does not work with nosy in-laws though!I'm a life-long outdoorsman and hiker. While the hat thing never worked for me while grilling, I swear by this trick in the woods (or your own yard): Spray/douse the brim of your hat with bug repellent of your choice. Mosquitos, black flies, etc, venture to that height and basically leave you alone. I've ruined so many hats this way.
Exceptions for me include Maine and Scottish Highlands. Their no-see-ums are brutal.
