Spirit 700 Restoration + My First Post!

Not to hijack..... but whats the deal with the 'dual side firing' middle burner???? I noticed that my neighbor's 1000 has one (he wanted to replace just for the helluvit but I told him no) but I have not run into any dual side firing middle burners with all the Bs I've picked up ---- they have all had a single row of holes on the top of the burner....... Where do you find these burners and are they any better than the single row burners? I look more for the rectangular hole burners (like stock) over the round hole burners....

So you are saying that those are original burners that are the better part of 20+years old? Impressive. I don't know why but I want one of those center burners now....
I have a couple sets of Weber burner tubes that still have the plastic spider guards on them and they are still in fantastic shape. The old ones lasted forever (almost)

Yeah the old ones really did last. And when they failed it was weird. They would crack following the ports so when you would light it, the crack would expand as it heated and you would get one area like a large flame thrower

Well - I will say that I have seen more burners that had plenty of life left in them be pitched because the crossover tube crumbled..... Its a shame that now its just a cheap to buy a whole set over just the crossover. Honestly - with the number of grills I've flipped, I've never come across a set of burner tubes that weren't functional --- just trashed crossovers. I'm running up against this for my Spirit 210 right now --- have to be VERY careful cleaning the crossover slots so they don't break out......

If you have surplus 304 stainless tubes, The crossover tubes are not too expensive if you buy in quantity for the older genesis east west burner grills. About $10 per piece shipped.

I buy the 3 burner crossover tubes only. I can always cut them down for a 2 burner.

Really beautiful job Peter! You did an incredible job! I'm finishing up my first grill, a Silver B like yours. I hope to make a post soon. I was wondering, how did you clean the inside of your firebox? It looks very even in how clean it looks.

Thanks Val. Looking forward to the future progress you’ll be making, it’d be great to see another restoration post.

I have access to a local sandblaster that I take these to, so I myself get it taken somewhere to fix up that firebox. Others here use a wire wheel attachment to an angle grinder and do the job themselves from what I’ve read.

Thanks Peter! I just picked up an angle grinder to improve my firebox prep. I just bought a flap wheel (#80) and some grit scour flap discs (280 and 320 grit) that I will try out. I had trouble holding a drill with a wire cup, I hope the angle grinder is easier. I was really pleased how my sand blasted endcaps came out. Here are pictures of my lid I just finished:inbound720603974385144974.jpginbound4166878972324008647.jpginbound1451894477724472735.jpginbound4604321797743288283.jpginbound6867739468717611046.jpgI will hopefully finish by this weekend.inbound8069087451293552699.jpg

The lid looks great, did you roll the paint on the end caps?

Yes, I did roll the paint. @Josh Dekubber showed me how in another thread. I used a small roller with a 1/4" nap but a foam nap worked well on the last coat. I used two coats. I did start with spraying for just the "nooks and crannies" on the handles and hinges and then flipped it over and started rolling. Lots of masking and I taped boxes to the bottom to help me hold them while I rolled. The rolling is kind of tricky, you have to make the last rolls lightly and continuous so it looks even on the surface. But it wasn't too difficult. I could even see rolling a firebox but I sprayed mine for this project. inbound5175547231605222180.jpginbound8719456374649213984.jpginbound9041833291267050213.jpginbound5870396400972906756.jpg

Nice work! I'm glad everything worked out!

Your wife know what you do on that table? :D
You got a point LMichaels. I did the lid assembly while she was at work. I had the table cleaned up before she got back but that's not what I'm worried about. The day before I picked up a free Silver C that I hid under the deck that she doesn't know about. There could be more grilling at our house than just firing up these Webers...😂
