Source of wood

I have a lot of oak off cuts from a local wood yard. The wood is finished I.e. Planed but it is otherwise clean with no previous treatment. Can I use that in the smoker?

as long as it's 'raw' wood with no treatment you should be fine

If it's furniture grade, chances are it's kiln dried. Not good for BBQ.

I buy chunks in bags usually, from ace hardware. I just got some mesquite logs that I'm cutting down into chunks. I'll also cut into chunks what i prune off my oak tree.

A lot of lumberyard wood is treated. I've used untreated, kiln dried oak with great results.
