Some questions around bringing a Genesis Gold C back to life

JKim: Do those nuts fit all the way inside the tubing, or does that silver part stick out of the end?

It doesn't go all the way inside, the silver part sticks out. Easy enough to deal with with a bit of spray paint if you want it to blend in.

OK, the ones that I scavengered from the donor grill went fully inside. But yah, I agree. they can be painted over.

Jon, can you post a link to where you purchased those inserts. I am going to go ahead and buy a few to have on hand. I am sure I will need them at some point.

JKim’s Post is what I was referring to. They can be a big help when you need to replace the frame pieces.

The only challenge I see is to drill the holes for the bolts which go into these inserts so that they perfectly line up with the position of the new crossbar.

I had no problem doing that on my grill. Every thing lines up great after installing the new cross beam. Also, you need to drill a hole for the cook box bolt as well.

Struck gold twice.... Genesis Gold

For now I don't have to rebuild the frame. Found another donor grill today. Another Genesis Gold. OK this one was not free like the other one but I only paid $40. I was comparing what I would have to pay to fix that broken top frame I decided a whole grill for about the same money works too.
Open cart Genesis Gold. The frame is in much better shape. Almost rust free. However the bottom panel is pretty bad too but maybe salvageable. And the grease pan is in better shape. So are the burner tubes except the connecting tube. And it is NG. I don't need that right now but I have been thinking for a while to convert to NG so I keep the manifold for now.

Almost no rust on connecting strut on the left side of the fire box. Just the hole for the bolt as it should be:

Whenever people are talking about buying expensive parts to rehab a grill, I always say to try to find a donor Grill first. It's almost always less expensive. Plus you still have a lot of good usable Parts left over

Yes!!! My words Bruce. Why spending big money on new parts when you can get good used parts in a package for a lot less.

You can replace that bottom shelf (which is big bucks) with a wire basket bottom shelf instead, for about $45 shipped from Weber. Here are pics and the part number:

Weber customer service sounded very familiar with this "substitution" when I called to order.

Yes I have been thinking about it. But I have also some ideas to build my own floor out of wood so that I can keep the doors of the closed grill. Not sure yet which way to go. I am not in rush.

Can't believe the wire rack is that much cheaper than that el cheapo piece of stamped mild steel SMH

So it is almost done. Basically built from two grills. Since the original upper frame was badly rusted I used one from an open cart Gold. I did nor realize that the open cart frame did not have the upper mounting holes for the side panels. So I drilled some holes and used rivet nuts with 4mm thread and some stainless bolts. Also I replaced the floor with a DYI cedar wooden floor sitting on 1" aluminum angle. Held in place by the clamps I salvaged from the rusted panel.
New burners and new stainless flavorizer bars which I got for $23. Plus some cast iron grates which came from a second donor grill and which are are in great shape.
Last thing to fix is the igniter. When I tried to save the old one, one of the pins inside the igniter push button unit broke when I tried to pull of the cable. And parallel wiring of a regular igniter did not work either. So I have one on order.
The hood is a bit scratched but well this grill is 12+ years old. I still debating if I should use the black enameled hood from my Silver B.
