Some Observations

So still loving my new Performer, yesterday here in Southern Ontario temps hovered in the low 40s, it was windy and rainy. So good time to cook outside . Anyways it was only a couple of hours to do a nice pork roast and the finished product was excellent. However I did find that I went through more fuel than expected to get the temps up and hold them there.

A Weber is what it is, and a grill unaffected by weather, it isn't. So the colder it is, the more charcoal you need lit to produce the same temps, all other things equal. Charcoal is cheap though, and you can even light two chimneys worth over a Performer burner at the same time if needed. You can use better fuel like Kingsford Comp or other premium briquettes instead of regular Kingsford, but even then, for winter weather you simply need to cook over more charcoal. For instance, to get the same temps that Performer users typically get with just the two baskets, you could also light a chimney and dump however much charcoal you wanted around the rest of the grill.

We in the midwest & east build wind breaks from plywood nothing fancey just a "V" out a 4X8 sheet, and a coulpe hinges, that you can put away till next year slows down the wind and lets the temp work more close to normal until it gets real cold. but in the fall it is great.

Thanks for the reminder, Kevin. I've been meaning to make a simple windbreak like that for my big WSM and my OTG, but keep forgetting. The cool winds of Autumn have most certainly arrived.

Well tonight with the winds of Sandy blowing into our region I doubt a break would help much :p. However I will look into a simple break for the less breezy autumn nights thanks. Wishing everyone in the east affected by Sandy a safe and trouble free night and days to follow.

Yea it's hard to put up a wind break on days like this without it being anchored to the ground..
Depends on what ya got, but I'll stick mine in front of my old gasser or the hot-tub or even put my garbage cans around it.:)
