Smoking wood question

After my recent experiment with smoking some chicken breasts with pecan wood, I've decided that I like the flavor it imparts and that was just a bag of Weber lumps that are store bought. As luck would have it, the family that owns a local brewery has a pecan farm (they also grow their own hops there). They have offered to give me some of the wood if I liked the flavor of the Weber kind. I'm assuming that it would have to hang out and dry out a while before I could use it smoke. So, what do I do with this stuff once I get it? Is there a place online that describes what to do with it and when it's ok to use it?

Thanks!!

I guess you've read my locally-harvested pecan comments, Dan. Maybe I need to try bagged pecan and see how it compares to fallen branches.

Pecan is a great go-to wood for almost everything. If you're getting it from a tree, suggest that you split it and let it air dry for 6 months minimum.

I did read them... sorry that they turned out that way. Yeah, I'd definitely try the bagged kind. Maybe there was something up with the branches.

Thanks, Jeff!!! Is there a preferred part of the tree? Branches? Trunk? Or just as long as it's not rotting and doesn't have any visible issues?

My preference is to use split wood, which gives you a good surface area to ignite and burn more thoroughly. So you're looking at logs that are at least 4" in diameter. I split the logs to a size that is comfortable for the radial arm saw, then chop them into 3"-ish lengths.

Squirrels galore around here. I assume the branches fell off after being used by the varmints for a latrine, lol.
