smoking salmon

I lit the coals in a chimney and poured the coals into the WSM. The temperture went to 325 degrees. I wanted to smoke the salmon at 185-200. I closed the bottom vents, but the temp stayed high. Should I have waited after adding the coals until the temp reduced? Any help is appreciated.
