Smoke wood question

OK, got my 18.5" WSM set up and pending on weather, will do my first ever cook tomorrow.

Question is, Wally World here only has apple wood chips, which I did purchase. Should I soak these and then place in foil in the WSM, or is it better to grab 2-3 big hand fulls, equivalent of chunks, and then spread them out over the charcoal?

Gonna have to look into where I can source some apple wood and other options here locally.

Thanks for the help all!

Not sure where you are but around here the local grocery store has chunks. Until you find them, I'd probably make a foil pouch.

Go to HD or Lowes they should have apple wood chunks. I think its better I have used chips before but it gets too smokey.

Thanks guys. Problem here in Canada is the lack of good wood. HD, Lowes, Rona (Canadian clone), all have good charcoal, but not a lot of wood selection.

Will keep on looking around. Has to be some available somewhere.

Brad is right. Amazon has lots of wood to choose from. I had a Bass Pro Shop gift card for $100 that I just used to buy some rubs they had plus peach cherry and apple wood chunks.

Prolly too late but you can layer the chips in along with the charcoal sorta like Lasagna. Somebody posted on that awhile ago, and I tried it and it does work.
If you just spread them along the top they will burn up in no time.
