SHRIMP PSA- Proceed with caution!

I came across this article while researching what the little BAP label was on bags of frozen shrimp. It was eye opening to me.

And researching further, I came across several more studies and articles...in fact, there were pages of similar articles.

It seems there are attempts at regulating or establishing standards but they're essentially industry driven...basically cartels and those usually are more about price setting than best practices.

I never knew! Going to rethink what I've taken for granted in the past.

Depends on how the salmon is farm raised. Some..............yeah don't want to touch it. In re to the shrimp. Their raised on sewage, same with tilapia and such.

I have to read that shrimp stuff still.....but the more I learn the less yummy stuff I end up eating.....
Here is a couple links to get you started if you wanted to read up on the salmon issues......farmed is pretty toxic. Brett said something about using farmed in a specific dish, I do not recall what it is now.
Now I am sure some farmed is better than others but these links will get you thinking for sure......just a couple I found relatively quickly.

I don’t do the Faroe Island stuff anymore, lacks any real distinguishing flavor. The Scottish stuff has more gumption.
I agree about the farm raised shrimp (Vietnamese stuff) Just kind of “creepy” I‘ve never cared for Tilapia,no deep seeded reason, I just think that a product raised for fertilIzard probably isn’t that interesting.the flavor I have gotten from it is rather like a fresh sponge, similar in texture as well. I’ll pass.

Tilapia was all the rage several years ago. I find it flavorless so never buy it or order it.
Local grocery store chain sell these gigantic shrimp...I believe they are 8-13 count/lb. They're huge. But I have to wonder what went into growing them so large. Almost like giant insects.

Just as a different POV on a little of this. Many of these articles are from the very same publications that want to stop pretty much all agriculture especially animal agriculture. With all kind of doomsday things like cow farts and the like. So in many of these cases I think it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Now; stuff that comes from 3rd world countries, and such? That is a known fact the aquaculture products there are raised in sewage and human waste. Not to mention the toxic chemicals allowed. But, EU laws are so strict (much more so than ours which openly allow poisons to be used in and on our foods), if I am getting something from the EU, I feel pretty safe consuming it regardless of whether it's fish, meat, or vegetable

No shrimp coming from the European continent. Not that's shipped to the US anyway.
India
Ecuador
Indonesia
Viet Nam
Sure some wild caught from US Gulf as well.

Not necessarily in that order.

Well I have 6 pieces of salmon I will be smoking this weekend.....
I have been eating this stuff for a while.......it would appear to be farm raised based on the colour but have been told its wild.
I will do more research moving forward.....none of this stuff is new to me, but the not knowing much about anything you buy from the sea is a bit sad to me.

I also agree with you mostly Larry.......its never going to be perfect of course unfortunately.

Not surprisingly, some of the statements made in here are almost unverifiable. Sewage and human waste?

And as stated, most are from go green and vegan friendly sources, and I would never punish myself by being vegan. Whatever floats boats.

In fact, one of the headlines I just read was, and I quote…”60% of the samples we tested” showed bacteria present in shrimp. Oh, the horror! And then they say “97% of chicken we tested” had bacteria present.

I do love shrimp.

I do as well, but I ONLY buy wild caught shrimp

I usually just grab a bag🤣 I’m going to have to check and see. I think it’s common sense that wild caught would be the best, wish I were close enough I could go grab some fresh off a boat.

Both Sam's and Costco sell these IQF pink wild shrimp from the coast of Argentina. Gotta tell ya. If you cannot find wild caught fresh these things are really gooooood. Wife and I love them

We've had those. Got them at Costco. Also found wild caught Gulf shrimp there before. They had the heads on and needed to be cleaned and deceived but tasted great. Not the biggest but good.

I’ve meant to go into Costco before but never been. Suppose I’ll have to next time I’m around one.
'nother PSA, @TimA ... Costco is a members' club. You'll either need to buy a membership ($65/yr these days, IIRC,) or go with someone who already has one (they'd have to make any purchases as well.) It is notable that depending on your state laws that you may be able to use the pharamacy or liquor outlets (if so equipped) without a membership, but those are sort of special cases.

FWIW Sam's carries the same shrimp I just simply pick them up wherever I happen to be when I need them. They're IQF and not cooked BTW
