Just wondered what the "shift register" chip's function is in the design of the Heatermeter? Does it have anything to do with the functioning of the LED's and alarm buzzer?
 
It makes it possible to have the Lcd attached to the Atmega 328 with 3 wires and it frees up connections for other things. It also has two of the LEDs connected to it.
