Sear station, useful?

Costco is known for their warranty so bringing in a grill back for a refund should be no problem. I mean, I purchased a bunk bed from them about 7 years ago and, not too long ago, one of the support beams below the mattress cracked. I called the mfr. first and they told me that there's nothing they can do since they don't make that specific model anymore. I went to Costco and told them my situation and they told me to bring the bunk bed back and they'd refund me the purchase price. Now I haven't done it yet and not sure I would because 1. It's too heavy to lug back to Costco and 2. I'd feel kind of guilty doing that because I feel that I've gotten my money's worth from it. I mean if they can refund people who brought back their Christmas trees in January (which is a petty move if you ask me) then I don't see why they wouldn't refund the grill.

"The hood being stainless steel isn't very helpful, it would be better if they make the cart/cabinet out of stainless steel, because the legs and bottom are more likely to rust."

Yah, you're right. Time will tell on how long the Genesis II bottom will hold up as we all know the Genesis grills with the closed cabinets are known to become rust buckets later down the line. If you really want a stainless grill then look for on 05-06 Platinum B or C. The frame is stainless and the good stainless as far as I can tell. Now those grills came with an closed cart and, of course, the cart components will rust. What some of the members did is make it into an open cart and problem solved. Here are some examples/builds...

Now finding an 05-06 Platinum B/C grill will be the hard part but they are still out there and if you're into rehabbing then this grill sound like the one you're looking for.

Not sure how I feel about the 9mm grates. I'm afraid it will produce very thick grill marks. I like a good, light charring but grill marks look cheap and often taste bitter.

Isn't that what makes the world go around:D! The 9mm grates are what caught my eye the most. And, when it comes to grill marks, oh well, I must the be king of cheap and bitter taste. Below is my GOAL for grilling steaks:rolleyes::

Yeah I don't really like the look of grill marks. I aim for this with my steaks:

That is going to be a pretty hot fire to get a crust like that on a steak without turning it into a lump of coal.

I can see that. And yes, you need a very hot grill to turn that out. Like I said, it is what makes the world go around. If everybody liked the exact same thing it would be boring.

I do agree that there are fans for the overall "crust" vs. sear marks. This Big Green Egg magazine cover was actually my dream target, however:
