I am looking for a source in San Jose to buy smoking wood(probably red or white oak), rather than buy the bags of chunks at Home Depot and others. I'd like to buy small amounts (maybe two boxes or so) of logs, then cut them into 6" or so pieces for my WSM. Can anyone point me to a source?

thanks,
Clark

Clark,

There's a place called Nature's Wood at 1275 S. Winchester Blvd in San Jose, 408-345-0519. They sell cooking wood to restaurants and residential firewood. I have not done business with them, but I've seen their delivery truck running up and down Hwy 101. Give them a call and let us know here what you find out.

Regards,
Chris

Clark,
Let me know your method for reducing logs to chunks.
I have three piles of logs in my backyard, one plum, one apple, one cherry. All 3 begging to become chunks.
Let me know what kind of saw you use, and how you stabilize them so you don't cut off your fingers and toes!
Thanks,
HJP

Chris-

Thanks. I will call Nature's Wood next week. I also found a firewood supplier that will sell small amounts of seasoned oak-- Oaktree Woodyard on Santa Teresa Road.

Henry, I don't plan on reducing the logs to chunks-- what I want are 4-6" pieces of small logs that will burn longer than the bagged chunks I've been buying. I'll cut them up with my miter saw.

I also brought back some oak from some property I own on the central coast. It is "Blue Oak," which I think is a variety of White Oak, so it should be OK. I'll try it out in a week or so. I'll still need a local source, tho, as the wife isn't going to let me cut down our oak trees for smoking wood -- hehe.

The first choice to cut down logs to chunks would be a compound miter saw second choice would be a radial arm saw. I use my 12 inch DeWalt compound miter saw and it works great.
