I am doing the Cardog salmon tonight (love it) and was unable to find any Alder.what I always use. I have on hand Apple, cherry and hickory(which is too assertive). so out of apple and cherry which would be a better replacement for Alder, or a combo? Thanks for any input.

I've got lots of alder. Pick up near seatac in burien?

I was down that way yesterday for the Hawks game, maybe sometime I can get some. We just missed the last time.

I know! *Blush* Won't happen again. I'll even add some peach wood to the alder. My email is on my profile.

Birch smoke is supposed to have similar taste to alder smoke.

I've not used alder but I've used paper birch with the bark removed.

Just curious,
Where do you get your alder? I'm always on the lookout for smoke wood and wood for my firepit.

A whole lot of wood was blown over during the '06 <STRIKE>Rosie O'Donnel</STRIKE> Hannukah Day storm. I spotted some downed trees just above I-5 near Tukwila. After a quick online consultation of photos and descriptions, I identified the trees as alder. Drove back, scooped it up and drove home with 12 feet of alder poking out of the rear hatch of the Wrangler. I stood it upright in the driveway for 6 months before I chunked it. It turned out pretty good. I got some maple in the same manner. Still haven't got my hands on oak, yet.

As I stated in another post, I've got some chunked fig and cherry wood that needs to be air dried. I have no room for that. Anyone wanting to pick this wood up should email me. I've got a 45 gallon garbage can filled with the stuff which I'll have to discard otherwise.

I'll think about taking the fig and cherry off your hands. I'd hate to see it go to waste....the cherry, anyway, I've never used fig before. Sure would be nice to find some oak....good luck with that!
