rode hard, put up wet (water in wsm after rain)

Hi,

Finished with my wsm around 9pm, closed all the vents and ate dinner. At 11pm I thought the wsm was still too hot to add the cover. Rain overnight, back from work the next day and water had seeped into wsm making a terrible mess of ash and water. This happens about one in five times (rains overnight or the next day before I get back from work).

I suppose I could get an ash bucket and scoop the hot coals. Any other ideas? Any way to prevent water from seeping in?

tia,

Jeff,
I had the same issue with rain seeping in, caused some pretty nasty mold, too. So today I stored it differently (according to this forum), by flipping the middle section of the WSM upside down.

I sometimes toss an old cardboard box over it if I don't feel like risking the cover but still worry about rain. Usually I just wuss out and cook under the carport overhang though, so I don't have to worry about rain unless it's angling in like crazy.

tim, that's interesting, how does that help keep it dry?

The idea is that if you store the cooker with the middle cooking section turned upside down, any water that hits the lid now runs outside the cooker. Plus, the cover is not water proof, as water can get in through the seams.

I cover my 18.5 with a plastic 55-gallon garbage bag first, then put on the Weber cover, which does leak at the seams. It's worked so far.

Yep, do this ^^^, and as long as your top vents are fairly tight you can leave the cooker out in the rain with no worries. Just don't forget to open vents back up to avoid mold growth.

I have a beach umbrella that I cover my WSM with. I use PVC pipe sections clamped to the deck rails, so whenever there is a possibility of rain (like right now; I have butts on for next weekend), I just open the umbrella and slide it in. I have a gasser, Performer, Bar-B-Kettle, and a WSM on the deck. There are PVC pipe sections on the deck rail next to each of them.

I bought a cover on Amazon that's unbelievably durable and works much better than the one from Weber. When I got mine, I liked it so much I ordered a spare.

I can't see any problem putting this on a WSM in the later stages of a cool down when the temps are under 275-250.

I use a an old plastic garbage can. I keep mine in the garage uncovered ,but when its still warm and rain is in the forecast I just flip the can over and balance it on the top handle.
