My Day at Ric's Backyard Warm-up 2014 Edition
I was invited by Ric Gilbert of Ric's Righteous Ribs to attend his 2014 Backyard Warm-up in San Jose. He invites BBQ competition teams to setup in his backyard and do a modified competition of chicken, ribs, tri-tip and a mystery meat. There is open judging; each contestant presents their entry for appearance and the judges sample the entry and provide verbal feedback and scores right there on the spot. It's a good opportunity for teams to get feedback straight from the judge's mouth. Then there is a big potluck afterwards where a bunch of friends and neighbors are invited over, everyone eats the leftover BBQ, and awards are given out. Oh, and a couple of bands provide live music. And there's plenty of beer. You can't ask for a better day!
Here are some photos from the event. Hope you enjoy them!
Here's our host Ric Gilbert temping some meat in his smoker. He and his wife are great hosts!
WSMs fired-up and smoking away.
Sisters From Different Misters is in the house. They took GC.
Lots of different pits were represented in the backyard.
A kettle and an Assassin.
The backyard is crammed full of teams.
Good day for an EZ-UP if you didn't get one of the shady spots under the trees. It was kind of hot that day.
Old bowling, tennis and track & field trophies will be awarded to today's winners. Ric's got a good sense of humor when it comes to the seriousness of this event.
The GC trophy is a handcarved beauty.
Porktera BBQ representing.
