Restored a Genesis 3000 - Family Heirloom

Hello all, my first post here.

Recently I was passed down an original Genesis 3000. My dad bought it around 1987 or 1988, as I recall helping him put it together when I was a real young boy and shocked him by firing off the ignitor. Anyways...

The grill was in decent shape. Here's a picture after I cleaned it up, replaced flav bars, cooking grill, and restained the wood.

I have two questions:

1. Is there anywhere I can get an original wood handle? Someone wanting to sell an extra?

2. Any recommendations for buffing out the lid? It has a lot of sun fading, and I don't want to spray paint it, and not sure if I should use polishing/buffing compound for a car on it with the heat.

Thanks in advance.

Yep - THAT's why when it comes time to buy a gasser, buy a Weber and you won't be sorry....

A1. On the lid, I would try some Rubbing Compound (found in Auto performance shops for a pre-wax treatment).

A2. You could give Weber a call - you never know, they may still have some around. Otherwise, the plastic ones (I think they're fiber-reinforced plastic) from the Genesis or Spirit from the same years should also fit.

In case you don't already know - remove the knobs and the plate that sits under them. There is a sticker under there with all the information that you and Weber would need for parts if it's still intact.

It is the original wood.

I've never seen one like it with this kind of wood, but I am 100% certain that's what it came with from the box.

Most of them I have seen have slats going vertical on the bottom vs. this one is horizontal, but notice in the middle of the bottom shelf is a cross member.

The wood was originally a red cedar color. I restained it with Mixwax Red chestnut stain, and if you look closely I left the top edge of the fold out shelf unstained, so it's the original color. It's very similar.

NOTE: I think we got this grill in 1986. I found an old photo that was taken in summer 1987 which has the grill the background.

Hi Wes,
Welcome to TVWBB.

Nice work on the cleanup/restoration of that grill. I think it's great that these old grills can be kept in good working condition with a little effort.

The hood is porcelain enamel that is usually pretty durable. I've cleaned up a couple black ones using Soft Scrub kitchen cleaner. It has a pretty mild abrasive. I'm not sure if that would help with faded color.

As to the wood handle, I would take the old one to a cabinet maker to see if they can duplicate it. If you have a friend who is a hobbyist wood worker they might be able to help as well.

It would be cool to see that picture.

Thanks for the comments guys. I tried using polishing compound on the hood but it made no discernable difference. I'm resolved to leaving it alone for now.

As for the picture, it wouldn't help the grill is covered. But I am certain we have more old pictures of it, and I'll find one.

13 Years later - it's time for a full restoration this time! It's a good Christmas season project!GrillOnCart.jpg

It's been sitting outside in my grilling area for the past 7 years under a cover, unused but not unloved. I tried to move it a few months ago and the frame collapsed, looks like the rust got a little bad under the cover. It can and will be fixed again.

Can't wait to see your progress!

Would you ever be interested in getting another one identical to what you had bought new. In perfect condition?
Yes, I'd put that out there. I don't care to do a refurb on one. I've got way too much other stuff on my hands to take on a grill project. But, then I've got the Wolf, 2 pellet grills, the Q320 (which is currently sitting in front of the house totally unused) since August when I had the deck refinished (was the only grill small enough to get off the deck LOL). I had to leave Big Z (so large I had to finalize it's assembly on the deck), Same with the Wolf, and the fireplace. Bruce and I had to carry that up the stairs :D
So the nostalgia in me still would like one. Not sure how practical it is LOL

I think I have the perfect match of that grill that you bought new in excellent condition. I wish I had a way to get it to you because I know that you would appreciate it. It's in line for restoration but in excellent condition including the original wood and side burner.
