Requesting advice/ideas on refinishing the grey wood

I don't have evidence to support it, just a theory, it makes sense and also doesn't ha ha.
The early US brochures also specified cedar. Later brochures just made mention of wood slats and handles. I have a friend who was a quality control manager at Weber during this time period(the one who gave me the one of a kind Jack Daniels grill) He told me that all the wood after that was a species of maple, with a few exceptions. What he meant by exceptions is that occasionally another similar wood was substituted.

I will ask my buddy if he remembers what the actual finish was on those gray slats. It makes more sense to me that it was a type of stain and not paint but I can find out before Bruce does any work to his.
When you talk to him can you also ask him if he remembers if there was different types of Gray Durawood?

Yeah, no problem. It is possible that they changed the formula slightly, or maybe even supplier. Interesting stuff to know for sure. I find out something new from him almost every time I talk to him although I try not to hammer him too much with the grill stuff. I certainly wasn't that interested in his work twenty-five years ago although I do remember bugging him to get me a deal on a grill.

I would have wanted to deal also! Surprising how expensive they were for their time. Well worth it though considering how they've lasted when even moderately taken care of.

I just remembered my gray lid also came off of a grill with gray painted slats. You could hardly tell though. Man that was the worst condition Grill by far that I've picked up but well worth it for that lid!

The lid is put to good use and the cart is now my rolling work cart.

Haha, that's a normal condition grill by me.

Or even massively neglected!

The surprising thing isn't that they were expensive back then, it's that they still sold so many grills despite their cost.

Being I was still a kid when these came out, did they have much for competition back in the early-mid 90's?
