I am having a rough time cleaning the hood on this 120. I was able to get the back of the hood clean with sos pads and a (Nyalox) cup brush. But the main part of the dome is very difficult to get the black color off. Should I return it all to black? Or try a different method to clean it?

Going to clean it up to sell it. I was able to pick up a new 1200 that I will keep. The pics make it look a little unclean now. The old “lipstick on a pig” concept.
 
This is the classic job for a grinder and wire cup brush. With some work you can get the whole thing down to raw aluminum. Besides making the inside look almost new, it works well for stripping and then updating the exterior color.

HF brushes are probably not the best, but for the money I think you come out ahead even if they don't last as long:

Jon is right on for the best way to clean up your lid. That is how I do my refurbish Q grills for resale. But like Larry said, if you are just trying to clean it up and continue using it, why go through the trouble. Usually people don't clean them down to bare aluminum unless they are trying to sell them. Two or three cooks and it will look just like it does now anyway. Just get off the main gunk with some kitchen style steel wool and a good cleaner.
 
I am think ing of watching coupons and getting one of the grinders with a paddle switch. Something about that side switch still bugs me a little. I have a really nice Makita angle grinder from my late brother in law. I tried it out and it flung every attachment I tried off. Took it apart and found the front motor housing plate with the bearing in pieces. Have to order up a new one and put that bad boy together
 
Larry, I have "dropped" the HF grinders before and they go through a hell of a dance on the ground before I can get them unplugged. Yah, pretty dangerous. The Dewalt that I got for $27 has the paddle switch and is soo much safer.
