Red oak slats from Home Depot for Genesis 1000?

I went to Home Depot today and after picking out some really nice oak 1x2, I had them cut 15 1/4 sections. After scanning it, the register said “red oak”. I was not happy to see this as I know that red oak wicks water and rots easily. Is there a possible way to make it work and last a long time? Has anyone had experience with red oak on their genesis grills?

Yes, I have used it more than once in spite of the shortcomings. It is probably my favorited wood in appearance.

I used ample (3 to 4) coats of spar (not poly) urethane. With a cover, I personally believe it will last quite a while.

I used dark walnut stain on this red oak:


This is also red oak but very lightly stained:

Chris, what grill are you making slats for? I know my buddy just sent you a handle and slats because I helped him make them.

I’m not too sure because I haven’t ordered a handle or slats from anyone. Do you know who sent me them?

Kept covered or in a garage, it should last several years.

Haven't used it on my Genesis. Although works well on the WSM when doing Tri-Tip...

I think I’m going to sapele slats and handle. I ordered a bunch of 1x2 that I’m going to cut in 15.25 pieces and then plane them down. Then I’m planning to coat them in general finishes 450 top coat. It should look good I think.

I just have the frame and slats left. The paint just comes off with brake clean on a rag so I’m going to strip it all down, scuff it and just spray the ultra high heat paint and see how that works.
