Red got Bathed

Red got bathed to see what all I need to repair her. This will not be a museum piece, just a good cleaning and paint job. She is a 99 (double EE) model. Had her since new and she been stripped before and repaired. Looks like she doesn’t need much, wood slats for sure, burner tubes and will get new V bars and probably will buy parts for the future.
Damn good grill.
Put her back together and burn her off.
Now the get parts order.

Yah, that thing has good bones. Probably good for another 20 years with a good cleaning and some minor parts maintenance.

Welcome to TVWBB T Gabriel!

I agree with Bruce; that's a winner! My only advice would be to take your time and see what you really need. It is very tempting to just jump and buy a ton of new parts. (Ask me how I know :D !) You will definitely need some, but you can sometimes re-use what you have - or find used parts from another "donor" grill. I think the priority is to get the best grates you can afford and to get thick gauge stainless flavorizer bars.

Keep us posted as you progress. All of us here will be happy to help you as best we can with questions, etc.

Jon is right. Don't just toss good parts. Your grates look to be very good SS solid rod grates. Definitely re-use them. Even the flavorizer bars look serviceable. They could probably be replaced, but look to still have life in them as is. When you do replace them, like Jon says, get some good 16 gauge SS bars and you will be glad you did. Same goes with burners. Don't just replace them if they are still solid. If they don't have any holes or cracks in them, a good cleaning will make them work like new.

Thanks Bruce and Jon, she is a keeper for another 20 years. I’ll will be taking my time on her. My grates are solid SS rods which were replace years back. Center burner is cracked near where it attaches to the crossover, I believe that is we’re the old one cracked last time to.
The flavorizer bar are still serviceable, but one of the long V bars does have a weak spot in it. It was over the crack on the center burner. It is repairable and will be place in another spot not over a burner. I have alway move the flavorizer bar around so they would last longer. I do plan on getting SS flavorizer bars in the future

Sounds like you have a good game plan. I fully understand not taking it completely apart and repainting the frame and other pieces and cleaning the cookbox and inside lid down to bare aluminum and shiny porcelain. They will all just get nasty again in half dozen cooks anyway. A good sound cleaning every few years and some routine cleaning and maintenance is all these grills need for 25 years and more of good service.

Yep, if you're only looking for a "driver" not a show queen you will be amazed at how easily you can salvage stuff

I've rehabbed my 1998 gen 1000 twice in the 23 years I've owned it. The first rehab about 12 years ago I got a set of RCPB SS FBs and today they still look like new. I picked up a set of Weber CI grates and they are still going strong also The burners were replaced along with the crossover tube at the same time.
The second rehab was a conversion to a 2000 frame and added a right side flip up shelf.
As the remaining deep boxes deteriorate and end up in land fills parts for these models will become harder to find. With that in mind I have secured a new set of FBs, burners, crossover, grates and igniter for future repairs if needed.

Good idea Rich on stockpiling some key parts for the deep box grills.

I also have RCP flavorizer bars but mine sure don't look new. I am sure they would shine up if I took a wire wheel to them, but if they get bad, I just run a putty knife over them to clean off the gunk...But, even then, I haven't had to do that much. The stuff seems to burn off really well.

Thank Rich, this will be number three in 22 years and I’ll check on the RCPB. I agree grab some parts before you can’t find them anymore. You can always sale them if something happen to the grill.
