Rancher's Charcoal revisited

I'm down to 21 bags left of that awesome Rancher's Charcoal that Home Depot carried last year. I checked out their web site http://www.originalcharcoal.com, it appears it is only available at a few select states. I sure wish it was widely available again. I'm glad I stocked up on it when it was $2.99 per bag. At one time, I had up to 45 bags. I now only use Rancher's Charcoal for special BBQ cooks, IE overnight briskets, or pork shoulder, etc. For everyday grilling, or cooks under 6hrs, I used the "K" stuff, or whatever is on sale. I think Rancher's Hardwood Charcoal was the best stuff ever created when it comes to BBQ. What do you think?

it was good stuff, especially at that price. i got 9 bags left and 'am babying it also. i just used some duraflame briq and was surprised that i forgot how long it lasted. the rancher sure got hot though. i think there just isn't gonna be a perfect briq. but if the rancher came back at a normal price i'd sure buy it. as it is i find ro briq to be just fine also. no, "k" is not gonna be on my menu.

Costco's in Mich. Carry it.
$5.97 for 2 bags. 10lbs each I think.

It does burn hot, but seems to spark more then others.

I know that some Costcos carried the Original Charcoal company lump this year but I wasn't aware that they were also stocking Rancher in some locations.

Hey guys I was told almost all lump available on west coast is mesquite lump..is that true?

Mike T,
Big Green Egg and Wicked good lump are available around here(Seattle area),so my answer would be no.

As far as the original question, I loved Rancher, and am still kicking myself for not loading up. Rancher lasted much longer on low/slow cooks and had a nice clean smell to it. Also left behind much less ash. I think there are a couple guys in California that have a few bags laying around.

I have loaded up on the costco original charcoal co. lump. IMO it is wonderful. Tom mentioned it sparks more than others but I would have to disagree(but I have only used RO) RO lump sparks alot more than OCC. IMO
I find very little I like about the RO lump.

Can the rancher be bought on line?
I will have to check that out.

I only bought three bags of rancher last year and when I went back they where out.

I tried my first Original Charcoal Company lump last weekend and liked it very much. However, I would have to agree with the other poster that it sparks more than RO, the lump I normally use.

I just counted the other day, I have 18 bags left. I will miss it when it is gone. I emailed OCC a few weeks ago to ask if they have other local suppliers. Only thing they had was lump and would have an hour drive to get it.

I found a local supplier of Humphries. I use it on everything but long cooks like butts. It seems to last forever. I picked up some royal oak briqetts last week. I was definitely not happy with that stuff.

the more i've been on differant lists and the longer my experiance and reading of other folks experiances i've come to a conclusion. there is no good charcoal. neither lump nor briquettes. seems some don't like k while some do. some don't like ro briq, some do. some don't like ro lump, some do. on and on. i think its just coming down to using what is available to you and what works for you or what you like to work with. its that simple.

If you ever had a chance to use Wicked Good Competition or Kamado you'd believe in good charcoal. Ahhhh like a fine wine - to crack open a bag of Wicked Good

This is so crazy you might just be right.

I thought Ranchers briquettes were ok but not great. They tend to break up after being lit or exposed to high heat in the wsm. Kingsford can stink like hot *** in the chimney but does a good job. I thought the OCC lump was awful. I love Fire King Lump especially in the WSM. My go to briquette is an off brand from a local grocery store. It's on special at $3.98 for 18lbs. It smells good in the chimney, it lights quickly and burns well. The best part is I have no idea who actually makes it and I don't care.
