Quick Weber Fireplace Question

I know this probably isn't the right forum to put this under but this is where most users check out first, so forgive me...

Just have a quick question for those that have one... Can you leave the cover on while the fire is blazing or are you supposed to only use it to smother the fire at the end of use...

Instructions (what little there is) doesn't say much other than put 2lbs of sand in the bottom.

Any quick help would be appreciated.
