Quick partial disassembly of Weber genesis 1000

I may be picking up a Weber genesis 1000 grill from FB marketplace. I need to quickly get the cookbox off to fit in my Highlander. It’s been a while since I have taken one apart. Am I remembering correctly what I will need to do?

Pins in the back to take off lid.
Remove manifold fastened with 2, 1/4 inch bolts
Single bolt from the frame - 1/4”
Do I remember correctly that the burners just slide out, they are not actually bolted down?

Tools I would need, 1/4” socket wrench, pliers, screwdriver

Any advice or possible pitfalls?

Vice grips. Take a vice grips.

My go bag is:
a large flathead screwdriver (it’s what I use to push stubborn burner tubes out).
Phillips screwdriver
2 pairs of vice grips
Channel locks
Crescent wrench
7/16 deep socket (1/4” drive)
6” extension
Ratchet
Impact gun
Small punch
Hammer

I also have some various metric stuff because sometimes I need this stuff not for grills.

I say vice grips because if something is being stubborn, you can usually break it with them.

If you can put the backseats down in your Highlander, you don’t need to remove the cookbooks at all. Just take the lid off, lay the grill down on its back and slide it in lengthwise. It will fit just fine.

That too. Just lay some cardboard down, because the time I did that when I couldn’t get the lid off, it royally stained my carpet.

I usually just pop the lid off and roll them into my minivan big wheels first.

That sounds much easier. I moved one a few years ago I seem to remember having to remove the cook box, but I could me mistaken, or possibly I was just scared of scratching up my new car getting it in by myself

I’ll bring cardboard and blankets for the bumper and interior sides

Yeah the box really doesn't take much more room than the frame alone and actually the grill is more compact trying to stow one large piece rather than 3

Thanks, great list. What is the 7/16 socket for? Also why a deep socket? I only really have shallow ones. Also what do you use the impact wrench on - that frame bolt? Would an impact wrench and a 1/4 “ socket be good for that?

I just prefer a deep well. I can strip most any Weber down with that assortment in a few minutes. I just prefer my impact. The channel locks work great on the wing nuts on the manifold.

I can tear down a Genesis 1000 quickly with a 7/16" wrench and a pair of vice grips.

I would usually leave the cookbox in the cart, but if you have to remove the cookbox, just snap the one bolt off with vice grips.

Same for manifold bolts. If they nuts or wingnuts don't' come loose easily, just snap them off.

Add a tarp to protect the car and a box to hold grates, Flav Bars, the slide out bottom tray / drip pan, and any tables that might fall off and it's pretty quick to have it ready to fit in just about anything.

If you are leaving the cookbox on, a few layers of cardboard help keep the ears of the cookbox hinges from digging in to the carpet.

Thanks for all the tips, got it in the car just fine with taking the lid off. Overall a decent condition Weber genesis 1000 redhead. I took the cook box off when I got home no problem. All the fasteners were in good condition as are the burners and the porcelain enamel covered steel grates and flavorizer bars

I lost one spider guard that crumbled apart and one of the caster wheels. There also seems to be an ant colony living in one of the legs.

Anyone see this before? There is this metal cable going around the bottom through holes in the lower part of the legs.

Also any suggestions for a makeshift spider guard for the original tubes? The middle one fell apart.

That wire is a cobble job to try to keep the front and back cross members from falling off. Obviously, the connectors inside the cross members have failed. There is a HOW TO for fixing that issue....the right way.

Is this the how to? Just apply the same method to the lower cross bars?

Jeffrey. You are correct. Just be sure to account for the fact that the cross members on your grill are 1" square, where the cross member in that HOW TO is 1.25". So you will use 1" connecting bolts instead of 1.25".

Of all the cobbles I’ve seen, I’m shocked I’ve yet to see a ratchet strap used.
