Q 300 for a friend

I just finished one of my last two grills of the season, a Q300. I am gifting this to a family from my church who could really use it. The guy asked for my help in getting some parts for his rusted out Charbroil.
I think this will do a lot better :smilekettle: :

This was the first time I used Rustoleum “titanium” color high heat paint. I was trying for a simple restore, but the titanium covered with high heat gloss clear coat did better than I expected.

I did an old-fashioned grinder/cup brush clean out. I guess I at least proved to myself that I could still do it🤣!

No shroud on the freebie main body, but all new internals.

I did not take off the paint on the outside of the lid, other than maybe scraping off a little bubbled up areas. I cleaned thoroughly to get all grease off and then coated the old paint with the Rustoleum.

On the inside I used an angle grinder with a wire cup brush to remove all the burned-on soot and grease. The easy way is to have these sandblasted, but I was trying to keep my cost down and thought the angle grinder does well on a Q lid anyway.

I wondered how you got that lid so shiny! When I did my Q320 I only had a cup brush and a low powered B&D drill. Wish I had an angle grinder and DeWalt drill like Josh uses! Now I know how its done right.

What about the bottom? What did you do to the cookbox, inside & out? I'm trying to determine if it is feasible for me to refurbish my Q300 too (or just sell it as is)

I also used the grinder on the bottom of the cookbox. That’s a little more challenging because there are more tight spots. I believe my bottom wire rack was OK, but if necessary spray with Rust Reformer and repaint. The plastic frame and shelves can just be cleaned and then treated with a decent trim restorer.

You can definitely restore a Q300. Even if you want to sell it, grinding out the inside of the firebox parts and some new paint will go a long ways toward making it easier to sell. But if you start replacing grates and other parts, your investment could price you out of selling. I would consider that for a keeper grill of course.

Did you leave the inside of the cookbox bare metal? Like the inside of the lid? Or did you paint both the inside & outside with BBQ paint?

I would never recommend painting the inside of a grill. Many here will cite issues with toxic fumes, and even the high heat paint makers say not to use it inside. I agree with this, although I know people who have done it with no obvious harm. I think after a long burn-off - and certainly after the inside is coated with grease - the risk associated with this diminishes substantially.

I will still say that the bare aluminum is safest and perfect for a Q or any cast aluminum firebox such as on a Genesis. That's how it is delivered new. I would, however, recommend washing it well after grinding and doing an initial pre-cook burn-off.
