Profit margins and food

We’ve had a bunch of convos here about store marinated foods and restaurant food quality versus home cooked meals.

Well, this video further adds to those arguments of what’s really in the food when someone else is doing the food prep.

I’m not really surprised. But I definitely find this eye opening.

The orange in orange chicken might not be orange juice.

I might have to replicate this at home to see what the taste differences are like.

A quick google search shows Tang’s formulation as: The ingredients in Tang Orange Drink Mix include sugar, fructose, citric acid, maltodextrin, calcium phosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), natural flavor, artificial color (Yellow 5 and Yellow 6), guar gum, and xanthan gum. Some formulations may also contain additional ingredients such as calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, gum arabic, acesulfame potassium, and cellulose gum. A zero-sugar variant includes aspartame, acesulfame potassium, maltitol, and other sweeteners, along with citric acid, malic acid, and fruit puree powder.

I was thinking the same thing as Larry about the tang.
They even tried to get us to eat space food in a tube/roll or something.
No telling what was in that but I think the main ingredient was peanut butter if memory serves me.

We were the generation of the ignorantly bliss.
All he cool guys smoked Marlboro’s too.

Processed food paranoia is kinda where I’m at now.
I cook better, healthier and more cost efficient than the places in town so I’m ok with a dose of this paranoia and only eat yucky food on special occasions now.

My wife, daughter and I very rarely eat out for multiple reasons. We don't like to spend extra money on it. Sanitation isn't guaranteed along with not knowing exactly what's going in the food. The more we experiment making things the way we like it the less interested we are in going out at all. The hand full of times we do go out a year is usually just to conveniently meet friends if we aren't near home but I'd rather cook for guests at home every time.

yeah, sort of the freaky 70's weird food association game - I was with you Andy on this one - When I heard 'Tang' I also thought of 'Space Food Sticks':
(there were peanut butter ones too) - Also Hunts 'Snack Packs' Which was allegedly something resembling pudding in a Vienna sausage can. ..... Yuck.

I sorta understand why a Asian restaurant might use Tang as ingredient - At home, I think I would stick to OJ when cooking for the family!

Pall Mall straights, Lucky straights and Camels straights for me. Until the coughing got bad. Switched to Marlboro Red box
Yep, rarely smoked the “Red Death” but Lucky’s, “Humps” then when they changed the packaging on Camel filters I switched from Marlboros! I still have a butt to smoke when I smoke a butt sometimes. I’m lucky, I seem to be able to smoke for a month or two and then quit for years. High stress sends me to the cigarette counter!
Space food sticks, gawd awful things but, when I was a kid they were so cool! Tang, carnation instant breakfast, wow, those are some memories!

I’m right there with you on this Josh.

Smoking wise, I tried to be cool but I just don’t like breathing any kind of smoke.

A few years ago I took a pretty intense class for a government job. It had multiple instructors and I got the snot beat out of me pretty good on the mats, 4 hrs per day, 5 days a week for 8 weeks.

One day going to my car for lunch I saw my favorite instructor smoking an cig and I was shocked .
He was no longer on the pedestal I had once placed him on. I never looked at him the same way after that.
It’s weird how times have changed
