Platinum II free Craigslist score - Maroon top?

Hi guys - I picked up a free Platinum II which appears to have a maroon top. Or, it could be a faded brown top - did Weber make a brown top during this era? Looks like it was manufactured in 1998 based on the serial number.

Zero rust on the cart and the plastic casters even roll smoothly. I'll probably be taking a sandblaster to the sides due to a bad attempt at painting the sides in brown. Probably doing the same to the firebox too. Where does the Platinum series rank in the Weber hierarchy? When compared to Genesis, Summit, Spirit, etc.?

Thanks for looking,

Yes that looks like a maroon color top. Cool color. Whenever you do decide to sandblast or paint again, remember to take the sides off the lid. Just a few bolts on each side.

Others will come in with more info, but I think back then the platinum was still a Genesis, but on the higher end of the scale.

Thanks for the reply, Kyle. Roger that on the removing of the sides before blasting. I did the same for my Silver B and Spirit 500. My thinking is the previous owner made no effort in removing the sides before painting as I see some possible over spray near the side lid.

It's a 2000-2001 Platinum II with the heavy frame and the porcelain enameled tables and a maroon lid. The heavy frame was only made in the Genesis family in those 2 years. Bobby Segars just rehabbed a similar green one (a Gold) and flipped it HERE

Looks like it has potential for a dramatic turnaround if you are up to the challenge. A not very common find and a very ruggedly built classic Weber. Great find! Please keep us posted with pictures as you work on it.

Kevin,
Nice find and unique color lid will make a great restore. Looks just like my 1996 Platinum II.

Ed,
The 2000-2001 Platinum series you mentioned is different than the earlier one Kevin found. Different lid side panels, handle, and cook box.

You are right on with the "ruggedly built" description, Jon. This cart seems to be of a heavier build quality compared to my Silver B and 1000. In the SF Bay Area there are a lot of free Weber grills available on Craigslist, but this is the first Platinum that I've ever seen listed locally for free or sale.
